Meta AI gets new ‘Imagine me’ selfie feature and multilingual support

Meta AI, Meta’s AI-powered assistant on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the web has expanded its language capabilities and now offers stylized selfie creation. Users can direct questions to Meta’s latest AI model, Llama 3.1 405B, which is designed to handle more complex queries than its predecessor.

There are questions about whether these updates will enhance the overall Meta AI experience, which many reviewers initially found lacking. Early versions of Meta AI struggled with factual information, numbers, and web searches, often failing at simple tasks like finding recipes or airfare.

The new Llama 3.1 405B model, which excels at math and coding questions, might improve performance. It’s suitable for helping with math homework, explaining scientific concepts, and debugging code. However, users must manually switch to Llama 3.1 405B and are limited to a certain number of queries each week before the system reverts to a less-capable model, Llama 3.1 70B. Currently, the Llama 3.1 405B integration is labeled as a ‘preview.’

Meta AI also introduced a new generative AI model, Imagine Yourself, which powers the selfie feature. This model creates images based on a person’s photo and a prompt, such as “Imagine me surfing.” It’s available in beta and can be used by typing “Imagine me” followed by a non-NSFW prompt. The training data for Imagine Yourself is unspecified, but Meta’s terms of use state that public posts and images on its platforms are used, which some users find problematic due to the complicated opt-out process.

Additionally, new editing tools in Meta AI allow users to add, remove, change, or edit objects in images with prompts like “Change the cat to a corgi.” An “Edit with AI” button for further fine-tuning options will be available next month. Users will soon see shortcuts for sharing AI-generated images across Meta apps.

Meta AI is set to replace the Meta Quest VR headset’s Voice Commands feature, starting next month in the U.S. and Canada in “experimental mode.” This will enable users to ask questions about their physical surroundings, such as seeking outfit suggestions while holding up clothing items.

Currently, Meta AI is available in 22 countries, including new additions like Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and Cameroon. The assistant now supports French, German, Hindi, Hindi-Romanized Script, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, with more languages promised in the future.
