My Journey at Law School: From Dreams to Unexpected Paths

This Law School Experience has been shared by Ruchi Rao, 3rd year law student at Guru ghasidas Central University of Chhattisgarh.

The Dream of NLU: A Common Aspiration

Like countless law students, I too dreamed of cracking CLAT and securing a coveted spot in one of the prestigious National Law Universities (NLUs). NLUs represent excellence, tradition, and a gateway to a promising legal career.

But as you rightly pondered, what if everyone achieved that dream? Would it still hold the same allure?

Life’s Unexpected Turns: Guru Ghasidas Central University

Life often surprises us with unexpected turns. For me, it was Guru Ghasidas Central University—a place not initially on my radar. But sometimes, the universe nudges us toward uncharted territories, urging us to explore beyond the familiar.

Tears and Resilience: When Dreams Collide with Reality

I vividly remember the day the results were out. I had hoped for a National Law University, but reality hit hard—I secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 10,000.

It wasn’t the placement I had envisioned. I wept, feeling like a disappointed child. Yet, little did I know that this disappointment would lead to resilience and growth.

Family, Dreams, and a Solemn Decision

My family didn’t fully support my choice of a legal career. But for me, law was everything—an unwavering passion. I began preparing for CLAT in 11th grade, immersing myself in books and study materials.

However, I made a critical mistake—I focused solely on understanding sections, neglecting the art of time management and mock exams.

Shyness and Self-Preparation

As a shy person, I hesitated to seek help. My base language was Hindi, and I grappled with understanding complex legal concepts.

But my “why” remained clear: Why law? Why National Law College? Why this path? I was self-prepared for interviews, but the competitive exam format caught me off guard. CLAT wasn’t a typical test; it was a battle of wits and speed.

When CLAT Didn’t Open NLU Doors

Despite my efforts, I didn’t secure an NLU seat. Instead, I found myself at Guru Ghasidas Central University.

Initially, disappointment lingered, but soon, I embraced the uncharted. Private universities welcomed me, and I realized that excellence isn’t confined to a few institutions—it blooms wherever passion and dedication reside.

Academic Experiences

Memorable Classes and Lectures

During my time at Guru Ghasidas Central University, several classes and lectures left a lasting impact on me. One particular lecture on constitutional law stands out. The professor’s engaging teaching style and ability to simplify complex concepts made the subject come alive. It was during this class that I truly understood the significance of our legal framework.

Overcoming Challenging Subjects

Legal studies can be demanding, and I faced challenges in subjects like contract law and criminal procedure.

To overcome these difficulties, I adopted a systematic approach. I sought help from professors during office hours, joined study groups, and practiced solving case scenarios. Persistence paid off, and gradually, I gained confidence in tackling complex legal issues.

Influential Professors

Professor Sharma, a seasoned criminal law expert, played a pivotal role in shaping my academic journey. His passion for justice and commitment to ethical lawyering inspired me.

He encouraged critical thinking and emphasized the importance of legal ethics. Under his guidance, I developed a deeper understanding of criminal law principles.

Extracurricular Activities

Moot Court Competitions

Participating in moot court competitions was a highlight of my law school experience. The intense research, drafting of memorials, and oral arguments challenged me.

Winning the Best Memorial Award in a national moot court competition boosted my confidence and honed my advocacy skills.

Student Organizations and Clubs

I actively engaged with the Legal Aid Society, where we organized legal awareness camps in nearby villages. These experiences allowed me to apply legal theory to real-world situations.

Additionally, I served as the secretary of the Debating Society, organizing intercollegiate debates and fostering a love for public speaking.

Seminars, Workshops, and Guest Lectures

Attending seminars and workshops broadened my horizons. Notable speakers discussed topics ranging from environmental law to human rights.

I vividly remember a workshop on alternative dispute resolution, where practicing lawyers shared practical insights. These events enriched my legal knowledge and connected me with professionals.

Personal Growth

Skills and Knowledge

Law school equipped me with essential legal skills: legal research, writing persuasive arguments, and analyzing case law. Beyond academics, I developed soft skills—teamwork, negotiation, and time management—that are crucial for a successful legal career.

Overcoming Obstacles

Law school wasn’t without challenges. Balancing academics, extracurriculars, and personal life required resilience. I learned to manage stress effectively, prioritize tasks, and seek support when needed. Setbacks taught me resilience and adaptability.

Building a Professional Network

Law school is about relationships. I formed mentorship bonds with senior students who shared their experiences and career advice. Networking events allowed me to connect with alumni, practitioners, and judges. These connections opened doors and provided valuable insights.

Conclusion

My journey from initially wanting to change to embracing the law school experience has been transformative. Guru Ghasidas Central University taught me not only legal principles but also life skills. As I move forward, I carry the camaraderie of my peers, the wisdom of professors, and the passion for justice.

Remember, law school is not just about textbooks; it’s about growth, connections, and finding your unique path. Enjoy the journey—it’s a privilege to be part of this noble profession.
