About Tamil Nadu Judicial Services Examination
The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission conducts a judicial examination for the post of Civil Judge (Junior Division) under the provisions under the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Service (Cadre and Recruitment Rules), 2007.
Before applying, applicants must register their particulars through a one- time registration system on payment of Rs. 150 towards the registration fee, and then apply online.
Tamil Nadu Judicial Services Eligibility
Age
- For Practicing Advocates/Pleaders and Assistant Public Prosecutors minimum age is 25 years, and the maximum is 35 years. In the case of the reserved category, the age must not cross 40 years.
- For fresh Law Graduates of all categories, the minimum age is 22 years and must not exceed 27 years.
Educational Qualification
- For Practicing Advocates, a degree in law from a recognized university and enrollment in the Bar Council of Tamil Nad or any other Bar Council in India.
- Candidate must have so practiced for a period of not less than three years on such date.
- A degree from a recognized university is necessary for fresh Law graduates, and they must also be eligible to enroll as an advocate.
- 50% marks in Bachelor’s degree for non-reserved categories is needed. For others, it is 45%.
- Must have obtained the Bachelor’s Degree of Law within three years before the date of notification.
Note: Candidates applying under the category of Practicing Advocates must be practicing as an advocate on the date of notification and must continue till selection and appointment. The same is with candidates applying under the category of Assistant Public Prosecutor.
Language Eligibility
Candidate must possess adequate knowledge to read, write and speak in English and Tamil.
Applicants who do not possess adequate knowledge in Tamil may apply. If selected, they must pass the Second Class Language Test in Tamil within the period of probation.
Tamil Nadu Judicial Services Vacancies 2022
For 2022, no official notification has been released yet regarding the number of vacancies. For 2019, a total of 176 vacancies were released. You can check out the notification related to the exam at TNPSC.

Tamil Nadu Judicial Services Training
Every person appointed to the category of Civil Judge will undergo training for a period of a minimum of 12 months as may be prescribed by the High Court of Madras.
Tamil Nadu Judicial Services Examination Stages and Syllabus
There are three stages to the exam. These are Prelims, Mains, and Interview.
Tamil Nadu Judicial Services Prelims
It is a 3 hours exam of 100 marks. 40 are minimum passing marks for a category other than reserved. For reserved categories, it is 30 and 35.
There is a negative marking of 0.25 for every incorrect answer.

Part C
- General Knowledge (Degree Standard)
- Test of Reasoning and Mental ability (S.S.L.C. standard).
Note: Minor Acts mentioned in the syllabus are only illustrative and not exhaustive.
Tamil Nadu Judicial Services Main Examination (Descriptive Type)
The second stage has a total of four papers each for 3 hours duration. The maximum number of marks an aspirant can score is 100.
For SC, SC(A)s, and STs the minimum marks are 30% while other reserved groups such as MBCs/DCs, BC(OBCM)s and BCMs need to secure 35% marks.
For all other categories, minimum marks are 40%.
Translation Paper
Translation of passages from English to Tamil and from Tamil to English. The passages will be from pleadings, depositions, orders, judgments, and documents.
Law Paper-I
The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, The Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, The Indian Evidence Act, 1872, Principles of pleading and the Constitution of India.
Law Paper-II
Framing of Issues and Writing of Judgments in Civil Cases.
Law Paper-III
Framing of charges and Writing of Judgments in criminal cases.
Note: Questions based on Law subjects will be both in Tamil and English. The candidate can answer either in Tamil or English but not partly in Tamil or any other language.
Viva-Voce Test
The Viva-Voce consists of 60 marks and all categories students must obtain 18 marks to pass in the Viva-voce of Tamil Nadu Judicial Services examination.
The object is to assess the suitability of the candidate, mental alertness, general knowledge, and principle of law.
