Hearing cases beyond court hours eats into chamber time and not family since we work after court: Justice DY Chandrachud

This is because judges work beyond court hours, he said.

You know hearings which take place after court hours do not eat into family time. It eats into the chamber time as we are working after court too,” said Justice Chandrachud.

The remark was made after Senior Counsel R Balasubramanian, appearing in a matter relating to armed forces, apologised to the Bench after it had to sit beyond usual court hours.

The Supreme Court’s usual working hours is from 10.30 am to 4 pm but the bench comprising Justices Chandrachud and AS Bopanna sat until 5.15 pm today to hear the case.

Before rising, Justice Chandrachud apologised to brother judge Justice Bopanna.

“Sorry brother. Kept you waiting till 5:15 pm today,” he said.
