Punjabi Lobia Masala Recipe

Lobia Recipe | Punjabi Lobia Masala

This is the masala which i made using the peas when i made the black eyed peas rasam. I loved the combination of this curry with the rasam, i also made kurkuri bhindi also. And it was delicious. This curry goes well with rice, you can have it with chapati.

Ingredients for Punjabi Lobia Masala Recipe (Lobia Recipe)

  • Black Eyed Peas / Karamani / Lobia – 1 cup dried
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 1 tsp
  • Fennel Seeds / Saunf / Sombu – 1 tsp
  • Cinnamon / Pattai – 2 cm piece
  • Onions – 1 large chopped finely
  • Green Chillies – 2 pricked with a knife
  • Ginger Garlic Paste – 1 tbsp
  • Chilli Powder – 2 tsp
  • Coriander Powder / Malli Podi – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi – 1 tsp
  • Cumin Powder / Jeera Podi – 1 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder – 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar – 1 tsp
  • Tomato Puree – ½ cup ( I used storebought)
  • Milk – 1 cup
  • Coriander leaves – 3 tbsp finely chopped

How to make Punjabi Lobia Masala

  1. Take black eyed peas in a bowl. Wash it well. Now cover it with water and soak it overnight. Next day drain the water, add it to pressure cooker, cover with fresh water and pressure cook for 3 whistle, simmer the flame and cook for 10 mins. Turn off the heat and let the steam go all by itself. Open the cooker and drain the liquid from the peas. Set aside.
  2. Now heat oil in a kadai. Add in cumin, fennel, cinnamon and saute for a min.
  3. Add in onions and green chillies along with salt and sugar. Saute till golden.
  4. Add in ginger garlic paste and saute for a min.
  5. Add in all spice powders and mix well.
  6. Add in tomato puree and cook till oil separates from it.
  7. Add in the cooked peas and mix well. Mix for 3 to 4 mins.
  8. Add in the milk and mix well. Simmer for 5 mins or so.
  9. Turn off the heat and add in coriander leaves and serve.
