The mentoring sessions were the cornerstone to my ability in transitioning domains – Melvine Mathew, PGP AIML

I am currently working as a Junior AI ML Engineer at Terralogic, Bangalore. Before joining the PGP-AIML-Online course, I was working as an Event Manager at an Event Management Firm.

The main challenge I had was changing the domain from event management to an IT domain. This made me feel extremely overwhelmed with the learning curve to making the switch. I think the main reason to choose GL was the rich teaching staff and accreditation from international universities like The University of Texas at Austin. I did have some apprehension towards online learning as part of how I would mitigate the questions that would arise from the learning I did. But luckily, GL’s weekly hands-on call solved this for me, and I would keep nothing down from the issues I had from lectures, and my mentor was able to address my problems with ease.

The mentoring sessions were the cornerstone to my ability in transitioning domains, and I don’t think I would have managed to have a smooth transition without these hands-on sessions. The quality of these sessions was top-notch as the mentors were industry professionals, so they were able to address how the industry works after graduation, which gave me a lot of comfort in times of uncertainty. My mentor was able to understand the helplessness that I had addressing the ocean of information that I wasn’t able to address due to my lack of experience by guiding me on how I could break down my problem and address them part by part to solve my projects.

I think it was a herculean task to shift domains, but I was able to do it. Thanks to the skills I learned. My internship at my company was supposed to be for 6 months but looking at the approach I had gained in my learning experience. I was quickly made a junior AI ML engineer in 3 months.

The single most important piece of advice I could give anyone from my experience is to take your learning step at a time. Understand how the industry works on a high level, and you will be able to slowly start solving topics that require more deep understanding. The field is huge, but don’t let the size scare you away from the beauty of the data science discipline.
