A Journey of Growth: My Law School Experience at Manav Rachna University

This Experience has been shared by Chhayanshi Goyal, Campus Leader at Lawctopus

My name is Chhayanshi Goyal, and I have just completed my second year at Manav Rachna University, embarking on my third year. My journey through law school thus far has been a blend of rigorous academic challenges, enriching extracurricular activities, and profound personal growth. This essay reflects on my experiences, insights, and the lessons I have learned over the past two years.

Academic Experiences

Memorable Classes and Lectures: One of the most impactful classes I attended was Contract Law in my first year. Our professor used to explain every concept using real life examples in the form of a story and through dynamic class discussions. This method of his teaching gradually became my habit to always relate case laws and to learn contract principles by using daily life examples.

Challenging Subjects: Economics was particularly challenging during my first year. As I was from Humanities stream and Economics was new for me to understand or to be able to score well in this subject was difficult, to overcome this, I formed a study group with peers, allowing us to share insights and clarify complex concepts together.

Additionally, I sought help from professors during office hours, which provided personalized guidance and support.

Also, Constitutional Law was also challenging for me in my second year. It being the Apex law of the country. Due to a number of case laws & well-settled legal principles makes it a very vast subject & hard for me to learn all of that critical Information.

To Tackle this, our Constitutional Law Professor Mr. Shubhank Sanjeev employed the Socratic method, which fostered critical thinking and dynamic class discussions. The deep dives into landmark cases and core legal concepts, ignited my passion for legal analysis and constitutional principles. As a result, I managed to score really well in my Exams.

Influential Professors: Professor Akansha Ghose, who was our Torts faculty inspired me significantly. Her enthusiasm for the subject and dedication to student success encouraged me to delve deeper into the material. Her mentorship extended beyond the classroom, offering career advice and support in navigating the law school landscape.

Extracurricular Activities

Moot Court Competitions: Participating in the 12th RGNUL Moot court competition”, 2024 organized by Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab. (April 4th– 6th, 2024) was a pivotal experience. This was my first ever moot Court and I participated as a Researcher.

It was both challenging and rewarding for me. Moot court competitions significantly enhance a researcher’s skills by honing legal research techniques, fostering critical thinking, and developing the ability to construct well-founded legal arguments.

This experience honed my legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills, and reinforced the importance of teamwork.

Student Organizations

As a member of the Centre for Legislative Studies and Research (CLSR) Committee, School of Law, MRU. As a member of this, I organize and carry out various events organized by our committee.

I organized events like the “Intra-University Abstract Writing Competition”, One Day Boot camp on “Introduction to Research and Abstract Writing” and a workshop cum competition “Beyond the pages Exploring the World of words” on social media post writing.

My role involved coordinating with speakers, managing logistics, handling registrations and promoting the event. These responsibilities enhanced my leadership and organizational skills.

Seminars and Workshops: Attending seminars and workshops has been an integral part of my extracurricular activities. One particularly memorable event was Attending the 5th Annual School of Law Summer School 2024, organized by the University of Bradford.

The program, themed “Law in a Time of Global Change,” spanned 7 days and covered a diverse range of pertinent topics, including Climate Change, Human Rights, Cybercrimes, AI, International Laws, and the Future of legal education.

It was an incredible opportunity to delve into issues of global relevance, guided by distinguished speakers who are experts in their fields. Connecting with eminent professors and peers from various institutions broadened my perspectives and enriched my learning experience.

Personal Growth

Skills and Knowledge Gained

Law school has been instrumental in developing both my legal and interpersonal skills. My legal research abilities have evolved significantly, allowing me to navigate complex databases and case law efficiently. The intensive writing courses have refined my legal writing skills, ensuring clarity, precision, and persuasiveness in my arguments.

Moreover, participation in moot court competitions and class debates has enhanced my oral advocacy skills, boosting my confidence in public speaking and courtroom scenarios. Additionally, I’ve developed soft skills such as teamwork and leadership through collaborative projects and leadership roles in student organizations.

Overcoming Obstacles

The journey through law school has been punctuated with numerous challenges. One significant obstacle was managing the intense academic workload alongside extracurricular commitments.

During my first year, the pressure of balancing demanding coursework with active participation in student organizations was overwhelming. I found myself struggling to meet deadlines and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

To overcome this, I adopted several time management strategies. Prioritizing tasks became essential; I created detailed schedules that allotted specific times for studying, attending meetings, and relaxation. I also learned the importance of seeking help when needed. This approach not only improved my performance but also maintained my well-being.

Developing a Professional Network

Building a professional network has been a pivotal aspect of my law school experience. Attending seminars, workshops, and networking events facilitated connections with professors, legal professionals, and fellow students. These relationships have been invaluable, offering guidance, mentorship, and career opportunities.

Conclusion

The guidance and inspiration from influential professors have not only deepened my understanding of the law but also motivated me to strive for excellence in all my pursuits.

Engaging in extracurricular activities, particularly the moot court competitions and leadership roles in student organizations, has been instrumental in honing my practical legal skills and fostering essential soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, and effective communication.

These experiences have provided me with a real-world understanding of the legal profession, preparing me for the complexities and demands of a legal career.
