A Journey of Growth: Reflections on My First Year at Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram

This Law School Experience has been shared by Thanush S, first year student at Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.

Introduction

My name is Thanush S., and I am a first-year student at the prestigious Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. Entering this historic institution, rich in legal tradition, has been a dream come true. My first year has been full of academic work, extracurricular activities, and personal growth.

This essay reflects on some of the most significant moments from this enriching journey.

Academic Experiences

My academic journey began with a strong foundation. Ranking in the top 1.5% of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan SSE 2023 and securing the top spot in the Humanities Stream for Class XII in the same exam instilled confidence in my academic abilities.

These achievements, coupled with my 190th rank in the Kerala Law Entrance Exam (KLEE), paved the way for me to pursue my legal aspirations at Government Law College.

Transitioning to law school brought its own set of challenges. However, dedicated professors like Professor Meenakumary Mam have made the process immensely rewarding. Her Criminal Law class stands out due to its engaging style.

She draws on real life experiences of criminal lawyers handling cases and uses captivating illustrations to make complex legal concepts clear and relatable. This interactive approach fosters lively discussions in class, encouraging active participation from students.

Professor Sanju Mam’s classes proved equally impactful. Although no subject has been particularly difficult overall, mastering the art of writing case problem answers initially posed a challenge. Professor Sanju Mam recognized this and became a guiding light.

Through regular case problem assignments, she provided invaluable guidance, honing our writing skills through constant practice. This emphasis on practical skills has been instrumental in solidifying my understanding of legal concepts.

Extracurricular Activities

Beyond academics, I actively sought opportunities to develop a well-rounded skill set through extracurricular activities. My research interests so far lie in the area of

Intellectual Property Law (IPR). I channeled this passion by presenting a paper titled “From Theatre to OTT: IPR Challenges in the Film Industry.” This research paper delved into the complex legal issues arising with the rise of online streaming platforms, showcasing my ability to delve into intricate legal topics and communicate findings effectively.

Furthermore, I am currently pursuing a diploma in contract drafting from LawSikho. This online course equips me with the practical skills required to excel in the legal field.

Leadership and teamwork are crucial for any aspiring lawyer. My dedication to these qualities is reflected in my active membership in the Naval Wing NCC.

I’m part of the Bhoomitra Club at Government Law College. On World Environment Day, I collaborated with Professors like Manjusha Ma’am, Devika Ma’am, and other club members to create a decorated pen recycling bin, promoting sustainability and teamwork.

Also, I’m part of an NGO called Value Education Trust. The Trust offers free abacus classes, enhancing mental agility and problem-solving in young minds. This experience underscored the importance of education and early childhood development.

My passion for music extends beyond academics. As a dedicated guitarist, I recently secured third place at the prestigious Kerala University Kalolsavam 2024. This achievement signifies my commitment to personal growth and perseverance while balancing academic pursuits.

Personal Growth

Finding a healthy balance between academics and extracurricular activities can be challenging. However, I developed a detailed schedule, allocating specific times for studying, extracurricular commitments, and maintaining a healthy personal life.

This strategic approach has allowed me to maximise productivity and enjoy my experience at law school to the fullest.

My first year has not been solely focused on academics and personal pursuits. I actively volunteered my time to contribute to the wider community.

Serving on the Judges Committee for the 18th All India Moot Court Competition provided a valuable learning experience. Coordinating with various committees and interacting with esteemed judges like Hon’ble Justice K P Balachandran (Retd.) offered unique insights into the world of moot court competitions, further igniting my passion for legal advocacy.

Furthermore, I volunteered on the organising committee for the National Seminar on “Empowering Girls for Leadership: Rise and Lead,” co-hosted by the National Commission for Women and Government Law College. Meeting Shri. A. Ashoki Chalai, Joint Secretary at the National Commission for Women and Child Development, served as a significant motivator.

Witnessing their dedication to women’s empowerment fueled my own desire to contribute meaningfully to society through the legal profession.

Furthermore, I’ve volunteered at blood donation campaigns, assisting them and spreading awareness about the importance of blood donation. These experiences have instilled in me a sense of social responsibility and the power of a single act to make a positive impact.

Conclusion

Looking back, my first year at Government Law College has been a transformative experience. The combination of rigorous academics, diverse extracurricular activities, and enriching volunteer experiences has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the legal profession and its potential to make a positive impact on the society.

The guidance of inspiring professors like Professor Meenakumary Mam and Professor Sanju Mam, coupled with the practical skills gained through research, and the diploma program, has equipped me with a strong foundation for legal success.

Moreover, the leadership and teamwork honed through the Naval Wing NCC will be invaluable assets in my legal career.

As I embark on my second year, I am equipped with knowledge, skills, and a burning desire to make a difference.

The challenges that lie ahead are exciting opportunities for further development, and I am confident that the foundation laid during this first year will serve me well as I navigate the path towards a meaningful legal career.
