About Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai

Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai, established under the Maharashtra National Law University Act 2014 on 20th March 2014, is one of the premier National Law Universities in India. The Act envisioned establishing a National Law University in Maharashtra to impart advanced legal education and promote society-oriented research in legal studies for the advancement of societal life in the country. The prime goal of the University is to disseminate advanced legal knowledge and processes of law among the students and impart in them the skills of advocacy, legal services, and law reforms, making them capable of utilizing these instruments for social transformation and development. The University began its first academic endeavor on 1st August 2015.

Since its inception, the University has made serious and sincere efforts to excel in the field of legal research and education. Within the span of six years, the University has been able to traverse an arduous yet promising path filled with many possibilities for the future.

About the Centre for Research in Criminal Justice

The Centre for Research in Criminal Justice was established to promote and advance national and comparative research and scholarship in the areas of Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, Criminology, Victimology, and Human Rights. The Centre was inaugurated by Hon’ble Justice Naresh Patil and Hon’ble Justice A.S. Oka of the Bombay High Court on 13th January 2018.

About the Conference

We are thrilled to announce that MNLU Mumbai has partnered with the Government of India, Ministry of Law and Justice (Department of Legal Affairs), to host a one-day conference on “India’s Progressive Path in the Administration of Criminal Justice System.” This prestigious event will take place in Mumbai on June 30, 2024 (Sunday).

This conference is an exceptional opportunity for you to engage directly with leading legal experts, participate in insightful discussions on India’s new criminal laws, and gain invaluable practical knowledge. We are excited to extend an invitation to all students of MNLU Mumbai to attend this event as participants.

Key Objectives of the Centre

  • Conducting research into the efficacy and adequacy of the Criminal Justice System in India and communicating the findings to the concerned government agencies.
  • Researching, analyzing, and critically examining laws, policies, and programs related to criminal laws and disseminating the findings through publications, workshops, and seminars.
  • Organizing various training programs, webinars, and seminars for stakeholders such as students, academicians, and researchers.
  • Initiating student-centric outreach programs.
  • Providing an interactive platform for exchanging thoughts on current events and topics in criminal law and human rights.

The Centre has successfully introduced two Postgraduate Diploma programs in 2021: one in Crime Investigation, Medical Jurisprudence, and Forensic Science, and the other in Litigation Lawyering and Law Firm Management. The Centre also organizes ‘Criminal Justice Talks’ to encourage discussions between research, policy, and practice, contributing to wider public debates. Additionally, monthly CRCJ Quizzicals are held for students across India.

About the Ministry of Law and Justice

The Ministry of Law and Justice in the Government of India is a cabinet ministry responsible for managing legal affairs, legislative activities, and the administration of justice in India through its three departments: the Legislative Department, the Department of Legal Affairs, and the Department of Justice. The Ministry is headed by Cabinet Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal. The first Law and Justice minister of independent India was Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
