About CARTSL

The Centre for Advocacy, Research and Training in Sports Law aims to provide a platform for law students and young legal professionals to explore various aspects of sports-related laws. An important facet of the sports industry, knowledge of the legal aspects of the business of sports is a tool that future lawyers must possess. The increasing interaction between sports and law has created a new societal need for a greater understanding of how the law relates to the sporting world.

About the Essay Writing Competition

The Competition invites participants to delve into various facets of sports law, exploring its theoretical underpinnings, practical applications, and contemporary challenges. With amazing cash prizes and publication in the MNLU Mumbai Journal, the competition promises to be an enriching experience for all participants.

Theme

  • DIVERSITY OF GAMING LAWS: Participants will explore the complexities arising from the coexistence of central and state gaming laws, highlighting the discrepancies and implications for stakeholders. Participants will dissect the legal nuances and controversies surrounding various types of gaming laws from traditional forms of gambling to emerging platforms such as online poker and fantasy sports.
  • AUTHORITY STRUCTURE AND ENFORCEMENT: Participants will evaluate the effectiveness of enforcement mechanisms, powers, and sanctions under gaming and sports laws, assessing their impact on compliance and deterrence.
  • IMPOSITION OF BANS ON ONLINE GAMING: Essays will explore the legal basis for imposing bans on online gaming activities, examining the balance between regulation, prevention of criminal activities, and individual freedoms.
  • LICENSING PROCEDURES: Participants will scrutinize the complexities of licensing under gaming laws, including the procedural requirements and legislative frameworks governing the issuance of licenses.
  • LEGAL STATUS OF REAL MONEY GAMBLING: Essays will investigate the legal ambiguities surrounding real money gambling in India, analyzing court rulings, legislative intent, and enforcement practices.

Open to undergraduate and postgraduate students from any discipline.

Submission Guidelines

  • Word limit- 3000-5000 words ( excluding footnotes)
  • Citation standard- OSCOLA 4th edition
  • Co-authorship of a maximum of 2 authors is allowed.
  • The decision of the selection committee shall be final.
  • All submissions must be made in MS- Word format.
  • All submissions should be mailed to cartsl@mnlumumbai.edu.in with the subject “ Essay Competition submission”.
  • All submissions should be mailed from the email used to register for the competition.

  • Co-Author Fee- 1000 Rs.
