Indian Centre for Child and Human Rights (ICCHR) Unveils India’s First Non-Governmental Research Organisation Dedicated to Intellectual Property Rights

In a historic move poised to reshape the intellectual property landscape in India, the Indian Centre for Child and Human Rights (ICCHR) has announced the establishment of the Centre for Development of Intellectual Property and Research (CDIPR) on Wednesday, 31st July 2024.

This groundbreaking initiative marks CDIPR as India’s First Non-Governmental research organisation dedicated to the comprehensive research, promotion and protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). Operating under the Naovina Development of Intellectual Property and Research Foundation, CDIPR aims to foster an environment where innovation and creativity can flourish. The centre will focus on various aspects of intellectual property, including Geographical Indications (GIs), trademarks, patents, copyrights, designs and other related IPs.

With its motto “Fostering Innovation, Protecting Creativity”, CDIPR seeks to become a pivotal institution in advancing and safeguarding intellectual property in India. Expressing his enthusiasm, Mr. Dipendu Das (Convener of ICCHR cum Director of CDIPR) stated, “The establishment of CDIPR marks a historic moment for India.

As the First Non-Governmental Research Organisation dedicated to IPRs, we are committed to fostering innovation and protecting creativity. Our vision is to build a robust intellectual property ecosystem that not only supports economic growth but also encourages technological advancement and cultural enrichment.”

Mr. Parmeshwar Kumar Mahto (Co-Director of CDIPR) shared his positive outlook on the centre’s potential impact, “CDIPR is a testament to India’s dedication to nurturing and protecting intellectual property. We are here to bridge the gaps in IP knowledge, advocate for supportive policies, and enhance the capacity of stakeholders. This centre is a crucial step towards making India a global leader in intellectual property.”

Objectives

With the primary objective to raise awareness and appreciation of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) among creators, innovators, entrepreneurs, policymakers and the general public, the
Centre is set to actively engage and support in the registration and promotion of Geographical Indications (GIs), trademarks, patents, copyrights, industrial designs and other related IPs.

This includes providing guidance and resources to individuals and organisations in the process of registering and protecting their IPs, as well as facilitating the registration of intellectual properties in the name of the Organisation or Centre. Capacity building is another key objective to effectively leverage Intellectual Property for innovation, competitiveness and sustainable development.

Through education, training, and skill-building initiatives, the Centre is ready to be involved in policymaking, support industry growth and address emerging challenges and opportunities. Further, the Centre plans to Advocate for Intellectual Property Rights, promoting a conducive legal and regulatory environment for the protection and enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in India.

Additionally, the Centre is up for educational initiatives, policy research and analysis, public awareness campaigns, collaborations and international cooperations for a comprehensive approach to Intellectual Property. ICCHR Administration has extended its heartfelt gratitude to all members and stakeholders for their unwavering support.

Official Notification

In an official Notification vide Administrate Notice L-AN/C/035/Jul/2024 the inauguration, establishment and Official website of the Centre is notified as fellows https://cdipr.icchr.in and any official correspondence, the email addresses cdipr@icchr.in or cdiprofficial@gmail.com are made available.

To oversee the operations and activities of CDIPR, a Special Committee comprising Senior Officials of ICCHR has been established. This committee will play a crucial role in shaping the direction and impact of the new Centre. In the coming weeks, CDIPR will also notify its permanent members, further solidifying its presence in the realm of academic research and legal education.

The establishment of CDIPR is setting the stage for a new era of intellectual property rights protection and innovation in India. As the Nation’s First Non-Governmental Research Organisation dedicated to IPRs, the Centre is committed to fostering a culture of creativity and innovation, supporting economic growth and advancing technological progress.
