Gujarat Law Fest is organizing the Intellectual Property Law Fest on August 19-20, 2023.

About GLS University

GLS University has been established with the objective of providing an ideal and creative learning environment and continuing the tradition of excellence in the education of the sponsoring body of the University, viz., Gujarat Law Society (GLS).

Gujarat Law Society, established in the year 1927, is one of the largest and oldest educational institutions in the State of Gujarat. GLS currently has more than 25,000 students pursuing their graduate, post-graduate, and doctoral level studies at various levels within the university and its constituent colleges/institutions.

GLS has currently more than one million alumni, all established in several spheres of work including business, commerce, law, science, arts, and culture. Several of these alumni are noted entrepreneurs.

About Faculty of Law

Faculty of Law (FOL), a constituent department of GLS University, is a premier destination for students interested in establishing a virtuous career in Law and aiming to become torchbearers of Justice. Faculty of Law has emerged as the most preferred destination for legal education offering B.A.LL.B, BB.A.LL.B (H), 3 years LL.B, and LL.M.

About IP Law Clinic

This clinic was initiated with the aim to aid innovative and advanced academic research in the field of Intellectual Property Laws for the legal and non-legal fraternity. Further, conducting various training and extension activities for creating more awareness in the field of IP laws constituted the main objectives.

Today Intellectual Property has gained relevance from a small discovery to a great innovation for mankind. In the current age, IPR finds its ambit almost everywhere.

With the presence of the internet, the issues of infringement of Intellectual Property Rights of the less privileged or the non-law professionals have been frequently taking place. Considering these challenges, IP Law Clinic was established. The aim is to make students and various stakeholders apt in the knowledge and advancement of their Intellectual Property Rights.

With the aim for the development of an understanding of the vitality of IPR Laws in both students and other stakeholders, this clinic provides a platform for healthy deliberation, discussion, and debate in the field of IPR and contemporary socio-legal issues and challenges pertaining to IPR.

About the Fest

Faculty of Law is organizing an IP Fest in line with this year’s theme of World International IP Day 2023 i.e. “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”. It has been observed since the last decade that the women of the country are marching up to revolution in the field of IP. Women today are bringing positive change in society through innovation, creativity, and inventiveness.

Keeping the same in mind the Faculty of Law’s IP Clinic has organized various Expert Sessions and virtual activities to nurture and shape the Creative minds in the field of IP. In our modern world, intellectual property enhances every aspect of our lives. Every day we come in contact with products that have protected IP. It rewards innovators for turning ideas, from a cup of coffee to an energy-efficient car, into the technologies that sustain and enhance our world.

The event aims to provide an ideal platform to create IP, celebrate IP, and commemorate IP culture in society and business. Such IP culture would steer people’s thinking toward innovation and propels them into entrepreneurship. It also aims to explore the grey areas where necessary interventions can be made to improve the lives and livelihoods of society.

Eligibility

  • The Lecture of expert eminent luminaries of IP sector is open for all Intellectual property enthusiasts, Legal fraternity, Law students, and Innovation aspirants.
  • The IP Activities are open for the students of all disciples across the Country.
  • Note: Registration is required to attend the Expert Lecture as well as participate in the IP Activities.

How to Register?

The participating institutions have to register by filling up the Google form through the link provided at the end of the post.

Registration Fees

  • The Registration of Webinar for Expert Lecture is free.
  • The Registration fee for each activity is Rs 250/-

Note:

  • Any registration form received without the receipt of the payment shall not be considered for the final registration.
  • Any form received after the last day of registration will not be allowed.
  • The teams shall be solely responsible for any delay caused due to delay in receipt of the Registration Form.
  • To confirm participation, teams of every Institution should register themselves with the Registration forms duly signed by the heads of the institution along with the registration fees.
  • No Individual can represent the college in more than two activities.

IP Detective

Participation:

  • Registration is mandatory. A team of a maximum of 2 students is allowed.
  • A maximum of 20 teams will be taken on a first come first basis.

Elimination Round: Infringement of Copyright (musical work, literary work, and cinematograph work)

Final Round: Infringement of Trademark (counterfeiting/ infringement of marks)

Structure:

The Competition will be divided into two rounds: Elimination (Preliminary) Round and Final Round.

Elimination Round:

  • A hypothetical situation will be provided on the basis of which IP detectives have to search for similar kinds of infringements in (real court) cases across various jurisdictions.
  • The situation will be released 24 hours before the submission deadline for Elimination Round.
  • Proper and authentic sources are to be cited for each case of infringement.
  • The greater number of cases or infringements searched will be marked higher.
  • The submissions are to be sent in ppt (PowerPoint) format. (Google link will be provided)

Final Round

  • The top 5 high-scoring teams will be selected for Final Round.

  • The situation will be released 12 hours before the submission deadline for Elimination Round.
  • Proper and authentic sources are to be cited for each case of infringement.
  • The greater number of cases or infringements searched will be marked higher.
  • The submissions are to be sent in ppt(PowerPoint) format. (Google link will be provided)
  • Teams have to then present and defend their submission in front of a panel of judges
  • Presentation time is 5 minutes and 3 minutes for answering questions of the panel.
  • The highest-scoring team will be declared as winner of the competition

IP Innovation and Creation

(Women IP Heroes)

IP activities in this sense have been continuing to grow the importance, including the promotion of open innovation that draws on these resources. The Activity is based on the theme of Innovation and creation in the field of IP.

General Rules

  • Participants have to submit a video of not more than 2 minutes which should not be more than 100 MB.
  • Maximum 20 teams are eligible to participate. Entry can be single or a group of two people.
  • The video should showcase the invention of women innovators that has helped the society or any technology sector.
  • The video must not violate any copyright, trademarks, patent, trade secret, industrial designs, and distinctive signs of any person.
  • Marking will be on the basis of Quality of Production 30%, Processing of the content 30%, and originality and Creativity 40%.

  • Winner Team: Trophy + E-Certificate
  • Runners up: Trophy + E-certificate
  • E-certificates to all registered participants.

Rules for Debate  (War of Words) Competition

The debate would be conducted on a Virtual Platform (StreamYard). Participants are requested to log in 5 minutes prior to the debate competition starting in proper formal attire. Oversee the debate to ensure all rules, behavior, and etiquettes which are to be followed during the entire debate as set out in this guide.

Eligibility: The event is open to all interdisciplinary students currently in their undergraduate program.

Participation: Registration is mandatory. Only Individual entry is allowed. A maximum of 20 participants will be taken on a first come first basis.

Registration Fees: A registration fee is 500 Rupees per team.

Structure:

Elimination Round:

  • There will be debate between two participants based on draw of lots.
  • The topic for debate will be released 3 hours before the Elimination round.
  • A total of 5 minutes each will be given to the participants to put forward there points
  • Each participant will get then get 2 minutes to counter the points of the other participant.
  • Top 6 scorers will qualify for the final round.

Final Round:

  • There will be debate between two participants based on draw of lots.
  • The topic for debate will be released 1 hour before the Elimination round.
  • A total of 5 minutes each will be given to the participants to put forward there points
  • Each participant will get then get 2 minutes to counter the points of the other participant.
  • Highest scorer will be declared winner of the competition.

General Rules

  • The Competition will be conducted in Two Stages i.e. Elimination round and Final Round. Twenty participants would be selected on the first serve basis of form submitted for the competition.
  • Debate is to give your opinion either in favor of or against the house/subject/statement.
  • The participant favoring the subject cannot switch to the presentation of general views or views in favor as well as in against, he/she is required to stick to one stand; for which he/she has opted for the debate, and vice-versa.
  • For the Elimination round, all participants are required to argue not more than 5 minutes, taking either a position FOR or AGAINST the motion for the final round.
  • The judges of the competition will select six participants in favor and against the motion for the final round of debate competition.
  • For the final round, the format and rules of the debate shall be intimated to the qualifying participants after the results are declared.
  • The topic of the final round shall be given prior to 1 hour to the selected participants. The Final Round of Debate will be conducted on July 22nd, 2023 on virtual platform.
  • The criteria for giving marks to the team/individual will depend upon the presentation of arguments, citation, exemplification, articulation, expression, subject matter, confidence etc.  The decision of judges will be final and non-biased and shall not be subject to any challenge under any circumstances. In case of any contingency, the decision of the judges will prevail final.
