Interview With Prof. (Dr.) Y.S.R. Murthy, Founding Vice Chancellor and Founding Dean of School of Law (SOL) at RV University Bengaluru

Could you tell us a little bit about the School of Law, RV University?

The School of Law, RV University (SOL) Bengaluru, stands as a beacon of excellence in the field of legal education. Situated amidst nine inter disciplinary schools, it enables students to explore the intersection between law on the one hand and on the other.

Technology, economics, business, films, healthcare, public policy, to mention but a few aspects. Based out of the vibrant city of Bengaluru, the School of Law is strongly committed to academic rigour, innovation, and holistic development. We seek to offer a transformative learning experience that equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the dynamic field of law. The school itself is a part of the RV University, an initiative of the Rashtreeya Sikshana Simithi Trust (RSST), Bengaluru.

The RSST has a rich legacy of over eight decades in Nation-Building through education. The vision of our late Founder, Mr. M. C. Sivananda Sarma, to use education as a tool to help individuals fulfil their aspirations, inspired him to start a School in a modest way with a single-classroom and six students in the year 1940. Today, we take that vision and that mission forward by providing students with a world-class legal education that will enable them to become responsible global citizens.

How is the curriculum and teaching pedagogy of SOL different from other law schools?

The curriculum at the School of Law is meticulously designed with the objective of bridging the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application of law. With a multidisciplinary approach at its core, our curriculum integrates the latest legal developments, case studies, and real-world scenarios. This dynamic pedagogy fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making, preparing students for the complexities of the legal profession.

The curriculum Is then supplemented by faculty members, who are a blend of both academics as well as practitioners and thought leaders in their respective fields. Their combined expertise and experience ensures that our students are better equipped to enter the profession with the tools necessary to help them succeed and flourish.

What about the infrastructure facilities in the School of Law?

The School of Law boasts of a world-class library that is equipped to provide any resources that a law student might need during the course of their educational journey. Today, libraries are not just warehouses for books, but an interactive learning space where students can experience and explore their education from a wider lens.

The School of Law library is designed to provide students with such an interactive and engaging atmosphere for intellectual stimulation and learning. From extensive collections of textbooks, journals, reference materials to digital databases, students have access to information that essential for their academic pursuits and research endeavours.

We at the School of Law believe that the law school experience is not merely one that is confined to the classroom. In order to ensure that our students have a holistic and well-rounded legal education, we provide them with access to a fully equipped Moot Court Hall and Legal Aid Clinic as well. Here, they can get firsthand experience regarding what is in store for them post securing graduation as members of the Bar.

What about the student and campus life at RVU?

Like I had mentioned earlier, RVU does not believe in limiting the learning of a student merely to a classroom. An opportunity to learn, grow and develop can present itself at any venue, and we seek to optimize on this at every turn.

To this end, we strive to promote a vibrant student community that thrives on a plethora of extracurricular activities, moot court competitions, debates, seminars, workshops, conferences, distinguished interdisciplinary lectures and legal aid clinics. These activities not only enhance practical skills but also foster teamwork, leadership, and a sense of social responsibility.

Are there any centres for research at the School of Law?

At the heart of RVU’s academic endeavours are their research centres, each dedicated to exploring and addressing contemporary legal issues. These centres provide a platform for students and faculty to engage in cutting-edge research, collaborate with industry experts, and contribute meaningfully to the legal landscape.

Students have the opportunity to actively participate in research projects, honing their analytical skills and contributing valuable insights to the legal fraternity. Specifically in the School of law, we have the Centre for Migration and Citizenship Studies, Centre for Victimology Research & Victim Assistance, Centre for Human Rights Studies, Centre for the Future of Things, Centre for Criminal Justice Studies, Centre for Disability Justice & Inclusion, Centre for Gender Studies, Centre for Legal Aid & Community Engagement, Centre for Health Law & Ethics & the Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Does the School of Law pursue any national and international collaborations for internships and exchange programmes?

We at the School of Law are primarily oriented towards creating opportunities for our students. To this end, we seek to facilitate internship programmes with prominent law firms, law chambers, policy institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations, and the like, from both in India and abroad. RV University has signed MoUs with over 170 top class universities, corporates, thinktanks and community-based organisations.

Additionally, we also offer student exchange opportunities, allowing participants to experience different legal systems and broaden their perspectives. A standout collaboration is its partnership with Seattle University School of Law, USA.

This collaboration presents a unique opportunity for the top five students of the UG programme to pursue an additional degree thereby obtaining a Juris Doctor (JD) from Seattle University along with an integrated five-year undergraduate law degree from RV University.

Can you tell us a little bit about the different programmes that you offer at the School of Law and opportunities for scholarships for students?

At the School of Law, we currently offer and integrated five-year law programme that awards both B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) & B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) degrees. We also have a graduate law programme that awards both a General LL.M. and an LL.M with a specialization in Intellectual Property & Technology Law.

We are also happy to announce the latest addition to our undergraduate programme – a B.Sc. in Criminology, Cyber Law & Forensic Sciences. This is an innovative programme that is oriented towards training the next generation of forensic scientists and criminologists whose skills will have application both in the public and private sectors.

We also seek to promote academic excellence at the School of Law, and one of the modes by which we achieve this goal is to incentivize academic accomplishments by providing scholarships from the first year onwards, with the amount of the scholarship available being up to 100% of the tuition fee based on merit.

What would you say is the one standout that you would highlight about the School of Law, RVU?

The School of Law at RV University is not just a place to earn a degree – it is a place to secure an education. These two are often used interchangeably, but we truly believe that there is more to an education than just a degree.

We seek to mould the next generation of legal practitioners into competent, ethical, and socially conscious professionals. We seek to not just produce good lawyers, but responsible members of the global society.

We hope that our students are known not just for their legal prowess but for who they are as people and how they contribute towards the betterment of their community, society, and the world at large.

We invite you all prospective students to be a part of our esteemed institution and embark on an enriching journey towards a successful legal career.
