What are some good things about your college?

A government run law college established in 1885, being one of the oldest law colleges in India Surendranath Law College boasts a long-standing history and a strong reputation for academic excellence in legal education. Our college has a good and strong network as it is situated in the heart of the city. Our library is well equipped with books and sitting arrangements.

As a government college our college’s fee structure is also too affordable and can not be compared with the other law schools in India. There are seniors who are always there to help and mentor us with all the possible things.

Also the alumni base of our college helps us to get recognised everywhere as our first president of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad, fourth Chief Justice of India Justice Bijan Kumar Mukherjee is the alumni.

Are there any bad things about your law college?

Everything has a bad side, our college might have a good alumni base and other things but does not have placement cell or internship cell as those modern law schools have. It is in history but it is not able to cope up with the modern day needs of the students.

Law degree needs practical training but our college is lagging behind to provide practical training by providing internships. It is upon you to increase your experiences section in the resume, you have to find and apply for the internships and other co curriculars on your own.

How has your experience in your college been till now?

It’s been more than one year now, the good things of my college benefitted me and the bad things, that I have sorted out myself as I am writing this blog as a campus leader of Lawctopus, doing internships and curing the bad things in my college.

Doing many things as a part of the law journey. In a law school it feels like 5 years is less as you have many things to do like events in college, internships in various places, participate in moot courts and competitions etc.

How’s the faculty at your college?

Oh, the faculties of our college are very sweet, they help us in every possible way. Even if we are asking them to conduct a seminar or conference on a particular topic, they always come and lead us as a friend. They always lend a hand with morality and charming nature.

How’s the infrastructure of your college?

Infrastructure of our college is good. It has a nice library, auditorium, seminar hall and classrooms.

How’s your hostel experience?

The college does not have a hostel facility.

How are your peers?

Peers are good enough to build some good memories in the journey of 5 years. They are not as competitive as nlu peers. My peers in this college give a good vibe and they are a diverse group of dedicated and ambitious individuals.

They are highly motivated, bringing a range of perspectives and experiences to our academic discussions.

How are the placements in your college?

As discussed earlier, no placement cell is there in my college. But if you are potential and ambitious enough then you can grab a placement, obviously it will need your own will and a little bit (a lot) of effort and dedication with good connections over LinkedIn.

How are the co-curricular activities in your college?

I would say co-curricular activities are good in my college as we host every possible legal activity. The college also hosts workshops, seminars, and guest lectures by legal experts, providing valuable insights into the profession. Various student-run committees also host events and courses.

What are some of the things you’d advise a 1st-year student?

Hey newcomers, do not worry, the environment of our college will be familiarized and your seniors will always help in every situation. This is your first year, the most insightful and enjoying days of your college life.

So enjoy it at its best. I hope you’re brave enough to beat those pricey tagged law students in the coming years. Be patient and impatient at the same time but at different things. Be potential and dedicated to make the most out of the 5 years from this college.

This experience is a part of our law school experience series wherein our campus leaders experience of their college. Stay tuned for more!
