Civil cases, particularly writ petitions, constituted the bulk of the new cases instituted at both the principal bench and the Madurai bench last year.
At the principal bench in Chennai, 54,715 civil cases, of which 35,368 were writ petitions, were instituted, and 71,144 cases were disposed of. At the Madurai bench, 38,327 new civil cases, of which 29,317 were writ petitions were instituted between January and December 2022, and 45,548 civil cases were disposed of during such period.
During the same period, 41,084 criminal cases were instituted at the principal bench, and 40,943 were disposed of. And at the Madurai bench, 66,011 new criminal cases were instituted and 73,116 criminal cases were disposed of between January 1 and December 31, 2022.
