Madras High Court refuses to quash FIR against BJP’s Kesava Vinayagan but orders Police not to “disturb” him

On April 27 this year, flying squad teams and the Railway police had seized ₹3.99 crore from three men on a train bound for Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu.

The authorities claimed that one of the men was associated with the BJP. The local police registered an FIR following the same and also booked Vinayagan in the case.

The probe was subsequently transferred to the CBCID, following which Vinayagan approached the High Court seeking directions to quash the FIR against him.

On Thursday, June 6, Justice Jayachandran agreed with Vinayagan’s counsel KC Paul Kanagraj that so far, the authorities had nothing against the BJP leader.

It also took note of the fact that the CBCID had already issued summons to him on a previous occasion and Vinayagan had been cooperating with the authorities.

Therefore, the Court said, it did not see any reason why Vinayagan should repeatedly be “disturbed.”
