Madras High Court seeks ECI response on PIL to educate people against seeking votes on religious, caste lines

The PIL by Vellore based lawyer Rajesh Anouar Mahimaidass said that the ECI should educate citizens about the Constitution, its preamble and its secular character, to ensure free and fair elections.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan and Justice Mohammed Shaffiq directed the ECI to file a reply to the PIL within 12 weeks.

Mahimaidass, who argued in person, told the Court that the ECI has adequate power to conduct a “year-long widespread campaign across the country to make voters aware of the fact that seeking votes on the grounds of religion, caste or language amounts to corrupt electoral practice.”
