My Law School Journey of Miles and Millimeters at Dr. RMLNLU

This Law School Experience has been shared by Kanak Goel, Campus Leader at Lawctopus.

Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, or Dr. RMLNLU, as it is commonly referred to, has been quite an interesting journey till now. Situated in the heart of the City of Nawabs, NLU Lucknow is what you make out of it.

I am a final-year student at the college, pursuing Corporate – Technology, Media, Telecommunication, and Data Privacy Law.

What stands out in Dr. RMLNLU?

The Student Community – The college has over 7 student-run committees and societies. These Committees look after the eventful air that the University is famous for. From Moot Courts, Cultural Fests, Sports Shenanigans, and Legal Services – the college has a body deputed for each of these and more.

Time and Opportunities – What the college provides you the most is time. This is why I say that RMLNLU is what you make out of it. You have all the time to do Moots, Publications, ADR Competitions, Study and have some time as a breather for yourself. In no way does RMLNLU compromise with anything to mend up others.

If executed perfectly, time at Dr. RMLNLU can be nothing but the most eventful, informative and fun time of the lives of those who come here to be a part of it, by taking advantage of the myriad opportunities available, students can tailor their experiences to suit their interests and career aspirations, making their time at RMLNLU a truly transformative period.

Focus on First Years: The college initiates this journey with a detailed orientation program that familiarizes newcomers with the academic, administrative, and extracurricular aspects of university life.

Emphasis is placed on a well-rounded curriculum that combines rigorous academic training with practical skills, ensuring students grasp the foundational concepts of law while honing critical thinking and analytical abilities.

Interactive sessions, workshops, and seminars led by experienced faculty and legal professionals provide real-world insights and foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Infrastructure and Campus: In all honesty, Dr. RMLNLU has hands down one of the finest campus and infrastructures.

The classes are now equipped with Smart TVs for a better understanding of some elemental yet complex subjects, and the campus is situated in the middle of the city, providing every amenity within the reach of the University, and that too at very ease.

What could be better?

It is imperative to know that there are always things that an institution can work upon. Having said that, its also true that Dr. RMLNLU tries to work and fix every and any hole that might be there on its wall due to any situation whatsoever.

However, I feel that the college lacks the requisite Public Relations and Outreach that it should have – especially when the students here are doing exceptionally brilliant when it comes to Mooting, Debating, Internships and Publications for that matter.

This not only attracts potential students and faculty of high caliber but also strengthens alumni relations and creates more opportunities for collaborations with leading legal institutions and organizations.

An improved public relations strategy could include regular updates on social media, newsletters, and an engaging website that highlights the college’s milestones, success stories, and upcoming events.

By amplifying its presence in the public eye, Dr. RMLNLU can ensure that the outstanding work being done within its walls receives the recognition it truly deserves, further cementing its status as a premier legal education institution.

Involvement with the Student Community

My time at the college has been an interesting journey. In my very first year, I was inducted in the Moot Court Committee [MCC] of the college, which eventually held one of the most important and crucial moments of my college life.

This is also the same committee that was responsible for hosting and co-organizing (alongside the Centre for International Legal Studies) the Global Rounds for Foreign Direct Investment Moot, 2023.

I was fortunate to sign off as the Joint Secretary for the same. I also worked with the Legal Services Clinic of the University, which tirelessly works and provides for the Legal Aid Initiatives that the University partakes.

I was also one of the Senior Member/ Contributing Editor of the Arbitration Law Society [Society for Excellence in Arbitration Law] of the college, which initiates a robust dialogue for developing Arbitration Law in the Indian and Global paradigm through its blog, sessions and events.

Another important aspect of me being part of the Music Club of the college – Sargam, where I give my time as a Singer. Being able to enhance on my singing abilities while in a competitive environment like that of an NLU speaks a lot about the college’s overall conducive and encapsulating environment.

Currently, I am coordinating another essential organ of the college body – the Kautilya Society, which is the Public Policy organ of the college, set under Vidhi: Center for Legal Policy. Society works to disseminate dialogue on the country’s overall policy-based developments through blogs, podcasts, events, and research projects.

Peers at college

I think RMLNLU not only gave me one of the finest people to be around socially, but these peers are equally and more intellectually prone, which allows everyone around for an overall development, atleast for me.

My time as a Student of Academia and Beyond

As told before, what RMLNLU gives you the most is time. I, meanwhile, tried my level best to maintain my academic record alongside the Mooting Credentials and Publications.

RMLNLU has an End-Semester Exam method of evaluation – where the student has to give one written exam, project and presentation for a subject by the end of the semester – which decides their eligibility for the next.

Hence, it also gave me ample time to work on the soft-skills, on legal writing and on general character development, which in totality is important for anyone pursuing a career in Judicial Sciences.
