Plea before Bombay High Court challenges State decision to allow sale of wine in supermarkets

The petitioner, who is a social worker, claimed that this cabinet decision permitted sale of wine in grocery stores without any limitation on such sale and purchase.

The PIL stated that this decision was contrary to an earlier government resolution of 2011 that was issued in light of the de-addiction policy.

It is also contrary to Article 47 of the Constitution which casts a duty on the State to improve public health, and as a corollary prohibit consumption of intoxicating drinks and drugs which are injurious to health, the plea contended

“The cabinet decision speaks loudly about making available elaborate market for wine products and effective marketing of wine in the State of Maharashtra and to popularize wine drinking in Maharashtra,” it was submitted.
