On November 21 last year, the High Court had refused to quash the proceedings against Rai initiated under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 448 (house-trespass), 511 (attempt), 323 (hurt), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and and Section 3(1) of Gangsters Act.
While refusing to quash the case, the High Court had noted that over twenty-seven criminal cases are registered against Rai.
Aggrieved, Rai approached the top court for relief.
