What is your problem with Urdu? Supreme Court on plea objecting to signboard

The Bench was hearing an appeal against an April 10 order of the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court.

The High Court had said that there are no restrictions in putting up sign boards of municipal councils in any language along with the State’s official language, Marathi.

It had, thus, dismissed the petition before it.

As per media reports, the petitioner had sought a direction to the chairperson of the Akola District Marathi Language Committee to take immediate action to remove the board concerned.

It had been argued before the High Court that the Maharashtra Local Authorities (Official Languages) Act, 2022, prohibits the use of languages other than Marathi on signboards of civic authorities.
