CBI raids Congress leader P Chidambaram, son Karti’s properties in ‘fresh graft case’

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Tuesday conducted raids at nine locations, including homes and offices of former Union minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram in Chennai and Delhi, ThePrint has learnt.

The raids, which began early Tuesday morning, are in connection with a fresh case registered against Karti Chidambaram by the agency as the main accused for receiving “illegal gratification”, CBI sources said.

According to them, it is alleged that Karti took illegal gratification of Rs 50 lakh for facilitating visas to some Chinese citizens. These visas, sources said, were granted to people to work on a project in Punjab.

The money received by him was also laundered through various shell companies in 2010-12, sources said.

“It is also found that foreign remittance was made. We have registered a fresh case and the investigation is on,” a CBI source said.

The CBI also confirmed that coordinated raids were conducted across Punjab, Odisha, Delhi, Chennai and Karnataka.

ThePrint has learnt from sources close to the Chidambarams that their family home and Karti Chidambaram’s office in Chennai, and the former Union minister’s home in Delhi’s Lodhi Road have also been raided.
