Meesho Becomes Most Downloaded E-Commerce App Globally

Fuelling Bharat’s e-commerce dreams, Meesho also saw over 57 million downloads across the App Store and the Google Play Store from August to October, 2021

Meesho, India’s fastest growing internet commerce platform has become the most downloaded e-commerce app globally in October 2021, according to a recent SensorTower blog. During this period, it also became the only Indian company and e-commerce platform to feature amongst the top-10 most downloaded non-gaming apps across the world. 

Fuelling Bharat’s e-commerce dreams, Meesho also saw over 57 million downloads across the App Store and the Google Play Store from August to October, 2021, as per App Annie, making it the most downloaded app across all categories in India. The company has seen installations in India grow by over 120% quarter-on-quarter in Q3 2021, outranking all other e-commerce platforms in the country for quarterly downloads.

Meesho has reduced entry barriers, improved logistical infrastructure for Tier 2+ markets and fuelled the discoverability of hyperlocal businesses and products. The company’s 5-day festive sale event in October cut deeper into India’s underserved markets with ~60% orders coming from tier 4+ regions, including remote locations like Khawzhwal and Sopore. Today 5% of all Indian households shop on Meesho every day.

With an aim to enable 100 million monthly transacting users by December 2022, Meesho has instituted multiple measures to bring new digital users online:

  • One of the lightest e-commerce apps in India:

To facilitate a seamless shopping experience, Meesho has built one of the most nimbly sized apps in the industry at just 12 MB, making the app compatible with low-end smartphones and low-internet bandwidth to address internet latency challenges even in the farthest corners of India.

  • Enabling higher profit margins and growth for sellers:

With many industry-first initiatives, Meesho is the lowest-cost platform for sellers across the country, enabling higher profit margins and growth. The company was the first to introduce a 0% seller commission model in July 2021 and has since registered a 10X growth in sellers on the platform. This helped sellers on Meesho save over INR 136 million during the 5-day festive sale event in October.

  • Growing product categories and selection for consumers:

With new additions such as sports and fitness, pet supplies, automotive accessories among others, Meesho has now grown its roster to over 700 product categories.            

  • Zero investment business for entrepreneurs:

Meesho enables over 15 million entrepreneurs to find financial freedom and start their online businesses at zero cost by helping them tap into their local and virtual communities and sell with ease. Entrepreneurs on the platform have now grown by ~4x over the last 5 months.
