Venture Catalysts Leads $500K Seed Round In Sutradhar

The funding round was led by Venture Catalysts along with LetsVenture.

Sutradhar, a unique media platform in smartphone content that recreates the stories from India’s ancient history and folklores, has raised USD 500K seed fund. The funding round was led by Venture Catalysts along with LetsVenture.

Other investors that participated in the round counted marquee names such as Renu Satti (COO – Offline Payments PayTM), Kinshuk Jerath (Professor at GSB Columbia), Rohit Chanana (Sarcha Advisors), Sahil Barua (Founder of Delhivery), Ajith Pai, Bhavesh Manglani (Co-founders of Delhivery), Shashvat Nakrani (Co-founder of BharatPe), Kush Agarwal (President of Uber Urban), and Sanjeev Kumar (CEO of Spice Money) along with others.

Existing investors Titan Capital (Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal from Snapdeal) also participated in the round.

Sutradhar is a well-established platform for creating illustrated short stories designed for smartphone consumption. The latest financial inclusion will upscale the overall operational growth of the company. It is a one-of-a-kind media platform that aims to become synonymous with Indian culture to build a universe around content and products inspired by ancient stories.

Commenting on the investment, Dr. Apoorva Ranjan Sharma, President, and Co-founder, Venture Catalysts said: “Indian cultural and festive market which is completely unorganized and unstructured, is close to 40 billion USD. We at Venture catalysts believe in the proposition of Sutradhar and parallelly supports the vision of disseminating the country’s folklore and culture by raising its curtain to the world.”

Speaking at the development, Gaurav Tiwari, Co-founder of Sutradhar said: “This fundraise will enable us to create high-quality content and distribute it to millions of Indians in India as well as across the globe. We want to become the go-to option for every Indian’s cultural and festive needs by building a universe of content and products around the stories.”

Talking about Sutradhar’s potential Shashvat Nakrani, Co-founder BharatPe, said,”Coming from a small town and hearing these stories in childhood, I see a Disney level opportunity if someone plays it well.”

Sutradhar, a media platform incepted by a group of IIT Bombay graduates namely- Gaurav Tiwari, Satish Meena, and Shaunak Samvatsar. The company is recreating the stories from Itihas-Puran for Smartphone audience and has created more than 1000 videos in four languages, Hindi, English, Marathi, and Odia, which are currently available through its well-appointed mobile app, with new videos getting added every day. Sutradhar app has more than 250K downloads and more than 100K registered users.
