Tomato pappu recipe or Andhra Tomato Dal is made with tomatoes, toor dal and spices which adds a tangy taste to the dal. This dal is perfect to mix with hot rice and ghee.

Hope you all are getting ready to enjoy your weekend..I have just started to do it..Today we had an awesome breakfast with chapatti and green peas curry. It was delicious and good for my diet. I really loved it after 5 days of fruits and vegetables diet..The good impact from that diet is, it controlled my hunger and reduced my appetite, which is really great.

Coming to today’s recipe it is a healthy dal which is flavoured with tomatoes, cumin and all kinds of yummy stuffs. I can’t tell you how good it is for you. At the same time it taste heavenly.

Ingredients for Tomato Pappu

  • Toor Dal / Tuvaram Paruppu / Split Pigeon Peas – 1 cup
  • Tomatoes – 2 large chopped
  • Green Chilli – 1 slit
  • Mustard Seeds / Kaduku – 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek Seeds / Methi / Vendayam – ½ tsp
  • Dry Red Chilli – 1
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring
  • Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp
  • Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander Powder / Malli Podi– 1 tblspn
  • Tomato – 1 small chopped

How to Make Tomato pappu

  1. Wash dal in several changes of water and let it soak for 15 mins.
  2. Now take in a pot and add water, tomatoes and green chilli and bring it to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20-25 mins until the dal is cooked completely..It should be completely mushy.
  3. Now add salt and mix well..Keep this in simmering..Adjust the water level if you need..
  4. Heat a tawa or kadai. Add oil in it. Add mustard seeds , cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, dry red chilli, curry leaves, turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and tomatoes. Mix this for a min.
  5. Pour this seasoning over the dal and mix well.
  6. Let it simmer for 5 more minutes.
  7. Serve with a bed of rice or roti.
