Beant Singh killing: Supreme Court asks Central govt to decide on mercy plea of convict Balwant Singh Rajoana by April 30

A Bench of Justices UU Lalit, S Ravindra Bhat and PS Narasimha noted that since nothing has been done in the matter and counsel appearing for Central government has no clear instructions, the matter should be “immediately looked into by the concerned authorities including the Government of India and the CBI.”

Balwant Singhā€™s plea for Presidential mercy has been hanging in limbo despite the government having decided over a year ago, in 2019, to spare his life in commemoration of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

In a petition to the Supreme Court from his jail cell, Balwant Singh said that his repeated pleas to the government about the fate of his mercy plea were met with silence. He called the delay ā€œinexplicableā€.

The mercy petition was filed in 2012.
