
A Bench of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and Justice SR Krishna Kumar noted that there were several issues with regard to holding processions that had serious repercussions on the city, and a cascading effect on its the traffic and activities.
The Court,therefore, directed the State government to ensure that no political party or organisation holds any protests or processions in Bengaluru except at Freedom Park.
The High Court directed that in case there is any disruption of traffic or activities due to protests or processions, the State government should ensure that it is immediately stopped, and submit a report before the Court.
The Bench was hearing a suo motu public interest litigation initiated on the basis of a letter addressed to a sitting judge of the High Court, requesting the State to evolve a proper mechanism for regulation of processions and protests to ensure that citizens do not suffer.
The respondents in the case included the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee and the Janata Dal (Secular).
