Interview of Gurbani Buttar: From a Corporate Lawyer to Founding a Social Media Agency

Gurbani Buttar, the co-founder of Trouvaille Communication Curators tells us about her journey from being a corporate lawyer to founding a social media agency.

1. How would you summarize your time in law school?

Like a massive roller-coaster ride- with no safety instructions! Army Institute of Law, as a whole, was very enriching in terms of the education I received, the experiences I had and the kind of person I became as I spent my time there.

Five years is a lot of time to read, write and re-write your stories and to grow as an individual. You go through challenges, boredom, laughter, and tears, all under one roof. But when you step out of that gate, you’re ready for the world.

2. Currently, you’re working in the digital marketing/PR sector with your own Company called Trouvaille Communications. Is this something you always wanted to do?

I won’t say that I always wanted to do this simply because I chose law as my first choice. But I was meant to do this exactly when it was destined.

Trouvaille was conceptualized with a friend over coffee (read: overdose!). I was always a huge social media enthusiast since I launched my Fashion & Lifestyle blog, Spangle Street, back in the day. So, I knew that a social media agency would be something I would enjoy.

It was a great way to channelize all my creative energies through this agency, which I now run with a friend.

3.  What does a normal workday in your life look like?

We are night birds! Social media content placement and postings start for us at 11:00 am every day so, we connect with our team and create content at night on most days. Once the postings are done, we often head out for shoots, client meetings or a creative brainstorming session.

4. Did you work in the legal field before switching to your current job? What inspired you to create your own company?

I was working as a Corporate Lawyer as soon as I finished law school. I switched jobs and started working for an LA-based law firm until it shut down operations in India.

I was free and wanted to take a break before jumping into another firm straight-away. Trouvaille Communications happened when my friend/partner discussed the need for infusing fresh content into the social media industry in the city.

We felt that this city and a brand’s social media presence could do much better in terms of the content they create.

We had a million ideas and wanted to bring them to reality. That’s how Trouvaille happened and we announced that we are ready to bring in the change!

5. Do you feel like the knowledge of law has helped you in your journey? 

Yes! Studying law for 5 years just opens up your brain and horizon. Most law subjects are related to everything around you. They fit in this life. You’re more aware than most people.

It’s like, you have a working knowledge of solutions to civil and social issues around you. Particularly for my social media company, the knowledge of the Law of Contracts has been very helpful.

6. How important do you think internships are while deciding which route to take after law school?

When it comes to internships, I personally feel quality should always matter over quantity. You could have a good Law firm’s name on your CV but if you’ve only faxed papers there or secretly played Candy Crush under your legal notes, it won’t help you.

It’s OK to take your time and figure out your subject of interest and then find a place that focuses on imparting that knowledge to you. The idea is not to get exhausted with the legal set-up before you step into it as a professional.

7. Do you have any plans of returning back to the legal field? If yes, what do you see yourself doing?

I do. I love Law and I love the excitement it carries. Social media is something that will always be a part of my life but I am ready to give a shot at Law as and when I get an interesting opportunity.

I would want to explore the area of providing Legal services for Child & Youth care or feel the hustle of my old friend, Corporate Law. I’m open to exploring so let’s see!

8. Lastly, any words of encouragement for law students who wish to stray from the norm and attempt to make a career in the creative sector?

I’d like to quote something from one of my favourite books “Girl Boss” by Sophia Amoruso:

“Abandon anything about your life and habits that might be holding you back. Learn to create your own opportunities. Know that there is no finish line; fortune favors action. Race balls-out toward the extraordinary life that you’ve always dreamed of, or still haven’t had time to dream up. And prepare to have a hell of a lot of fun along the way.”
