Justice Gokani then proposed that judges should be addressed as “Sirs” instead of “My Lord” or “Your Honour”, and cited a discussion at the National Judicial Academy where former Supreme Court judge Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya had noted that many lawyers in the Gujarat High Court were already using the term “Sir.”
“I believe it used to be either ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam’, then it was ‘Sirs’. That is the right way of doing it rather than ‘My Lord’ or ‘Your Honour’,” she said.
