Kerala High Court orders police protection for Amal Jyothi College amidst protests after student’s suicide

On June 2, a 20-year-old female student of the college was found hanging in her room at the college hostel.

The incident sparked massive protests in the campus and also led to several students taking to social media to highlight various issues they have faced at the college including the harassment from college staff, moral policing, etc.

As per the plea moved by the college, several persons belonging to student political organisations such as the Students Federation of India (SFI), Kerala Students Union (KSU), Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), gathered at the main gates of its campus on June 6 and shouted abusive slogans. It is alleged that these persons also blocked the entry and exit paths to and from the college.

Some of them conducted dharnas in front of the college gate, the plea said, causing a “hostage like situation resulting in total breakdown of law and order”.

However, no action was taken by the police personnel who were present there to control or disburse the crowd, the plea claimed.

The petition also said that the college management was forced to close the college causing hardship to them and also affecting university exams and the admission process for new students.

Therefore, the petition sought police protection for its staff and property so as to ensure the maintenance of law and order around its campus
