The University is emerging as one of pre-eminent legal institutes in the educational firmament of the country

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT)Ministry of Commerce and IndustryGovernment of India, has endowed the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam with an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Chair, under the Scheme for Pedagogy and Research in IPRs for Holistic Education and Academia (SPRIHA), to benefit the people of the North-East region of India in protecting their IPRs.

The Chair, since its inception in 2018, has concertedly focused its efforts towards preservation and promulgation of IP resources of the North-East region and has been fervently engaged in building capacity of the grass-root creators/producers/owners of the region towards protection of their IP rights, in order to strengthen the overall IP eco-system of the nation.

About the Online Regional Convention

Women play a significant role in every community. Their contributions are immense in terms of preserving the traditional heritage of their respective communities. The North-East Region of India comprising of the States of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura is home to a large number of ethnic communities such as Adi, Bodo, Deori, Angami, Naga, Garo, Dafla, Khasi, Kuki, Mising, Rabha, Apatani, and others.

The regional repository of natural and cultural riches has informed the traditional art, craft, cultural expressions, medicinal practices and many other forms of regional ingenuity of the ethnic communities of the region. The women of North-East India have harnessed the skills of engendering the traditional art and craft of the region since time immemorial.

They weave fairy tales in their looms and are adept at creating beautiful handloom and handicraft items, apart from possessing eclectic knowledge of traditional medicinal practices. Despite being a repository of such traditional and cultural richness, there is a significant lack of IP awareness in the North-East; which is a sad reflection of the fact that the grass-root level creators/producers/owners of the region are not advertent to the creative and commercial sanctity of their intellectual acreage.

The much-needed intervention at this juncture, is the generation of awareness among the grass-root stakeholder about preservation of their valuable knowledge, protection of their ownership over their intellectual and creative resources, profitable commercialization of the same and sustainability of traditional knowledge and practices.

With this objective in mind, the DPIIT-IPR Chair of NLUJA, Assam under the guidance of their patron, Prof. (Dr) V.K. Ahuja, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of NLUJA, Assam, is organising an online Regional Convention on Exploring the Intellectual Property Potential of the North-East Region with Special Focus on Empowering Women: Challenges and Opportunities on 29th of March, 2022 which will be a day-long programme.

This Convention is an endeavour of the University to get on board the stakeholders of the North-East region to join forces with NLUJA, Assam in order that the IP related services of the University could be made accessible to the grass-root level women creators, innovators and entrepreneurs sparsed across the region.
