Punjab Judicial Services Examination: Everything You Need to Know

About the Punjab Judicial Services Examination

Punjab Judicial Services Examination is conducted annually for the post of Civil Judge (Junior Division). Anyone who meets the eligibility criteria can apply for the exam. 

In the Punjab Judicial Services Examination, Prelims comprise of 125 questions, and one-fifth of marks are deducted for every incorrect answer. Candidates applying for Punjab Judicial Services Examination should also be well versed in the Punjabi (Gurmukhi) language. 

Moving on to the Mains examination, candidates need to appear for a total of five papers that last for 3 hours each. Candidates will be required to qualify all papers before appearing for the Interview round which is of 100 marks. 

Finally, the aggregate of Mains and Interview will be taken into account when the merit list will be released.

Punjab Judicial Service Examination Eligibility

Education 

1. A Degree of Bachelor of Law from any University incorporated by Law in India or from Universities mentioned below: 

• Punjab University (undivided)
• The Dacca University
• The Tribhuvan University, Nepal
• The Mandalay University of Sindh University in Rangoon/Burma
• Or should be a Barrister of England or Ireland or a member of the Faculty of Advocates of Scotland.

The expression “Degree of Bachelor of Laws” means a degree entitling a candidate to be enrolled as an Advocate under the Advocate Act, 1961 and the Rules made thereunder.

Language 

The candidate needs to know the Punjabi language skills of Matric or its equivalent standard (Reading, Writing, Spoken).

Age

1. Candidates should not be below 21 years and above 37 years of age on the last date of submission of online application form.
2. For the reserved categories, the upper age limit is up to 42 years & for all States/Central Government employees, 45.
3. The upper age limit relaxation provided to Widows, Divorced women, and other Categories of Women is up to 42 years.
4. The upper age limit has also relaxed up to 47 years for Physically Handicapped persons having domicile of Punjab.

Punjab Judicial Services Examination Application Process and Fees

Application Process

The application process is online, and candidates must fill out the correct information. Also, any reservation benefit availed by the candidate is to be mentioned in the application form. 

Fee

1. General category and all other reserved categories of other states: Rs. 1000
2. Female Candidates of general category and other states: Rs. 250
3. Reserved Category Punjab state: Rs. 250
4. Physically disabled candidates with 40% disability of Punjab state: Nil

Note: For Law Subjects, the syllabus is similar for Prelims and Mains.

Candidates need to secure 150 marks (100 marks for reserved categories) in the Preliminary Examination to sit for Mains.

Civil Law – II (Paper-II)

• Muslim Law

Criminal Law (Paper III)

• The Code of Criminal Procedure
• The Indian Penal Code
• The Indian Evidence Act

English (Paper IV)

• Essay writing (1000-1100 words)
• Comprehension
• Correction of sentence
• Précis writing
• Making sentences with particular phrases and words

Language (Paper V)

• Translations of Punjabi, which are given in the Gurumukhi script.
• The only paper with total marks of 150.

Interview

Viva-voce consists of a total of 100 marks. To appear for the viva, candidates need to secure 50% qualifying marks in the aggregate of all the written papers and qualify the Punjabi (Gurmukhi) language paper.
