Retd IPS officer granted permanent custody of his badge, cap marked as ‘evidence’ in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case

The IPS officer, Dr. Prateep V Phillip was serving as the Additional Superintendent of Police, Kandeepuram at the time and was severely injured when the Gandhi’s assassination took place.

The blood-stained cap and badge had been taken from Philip as evidence and marked as exhibits in the criminal case initiated after Gandhi was assassinated

The First Additional Sessions Judge, Chennai ordered that the same be returned to Philip after high-resolution photos of the same are taken.

The Court also directed that it should be produced before the court as and when needed during exceptional circumstances.

The same court had in October 2020 granted Philip temporary custody of the two items so that he could wear them during his last few days in service.

“This Court salutes the commendable and impeccable service of the petitioner as responsible police officer and wish him long, peaceful retirement life with all enthusiasm to serve the society as earlier. All is well.” Justice T Chandrasekharan had ruled in October, 2021.

Dr Phillip had received the Prime Ministerā€™s Medal for meritorious service in 2003 and the Presidentā€™s Medal for distinguished service in 2012.

Advocates Sanjay Pinto, Akhil Bhansali, Vidya Pinto, Vandhiyathevan Veera and Vishwanthini M appeared for the IPS officer whereas Public Prosecutor Surendra Mohan appeared for the respondent.
