The 15-Year Story of JGLS (2009-2014): Making of a World-Class Institution

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 published recently has once again strengthened our vision and mission for establishing a world-class global university in India.

We are profoundly grateful to the Benefactor and Founding Chancellor of JGU, Mr. Naveen Jindal for his outstanding leadership and philanthropy culminating in his inspiring contributions towards institution building.

Starting its journey with just 21 faculty members and 112 students in 2009, JGLS today has over 551 full-time faculty members and over 5,000 students.

The programmes that JGLS currently offers include five-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons), B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons), and B.Com LL.B. (Hons) programmes; a three year LL.B. (Hons) programme; B.A. (Legal Studies) and B.A. (Criminology and Criminal Justice) programmes; a one year LL.M. programme and a Ph.D. programme. In terms of yearly admissions, the student numbers have grown from 112 in 2009 to 1,607 in 2023.

Having world-class faculty has been a key driving force that has placed JGLS in the map of the world’s top law schools. A staggering 80% of total JGLS faculty members have international qualifications.

All our faculty members have outstanding academic qualifications from the leading national and international institutions. The numbers of faculty members with international qualifications rose from 20 in 2009 to 443 in 2023.

The faculty members of JGLS come from 38 countries and regions. We are indeed fortunate to have a fantastically diverse group of individuals representing all states and union territories of India, besides many countries in the world.

As internationalisation is a key focus of JGU, JGLS has forged 235 international collaborations with the world’s top universities and law schools. Consequently, student mobility for different semester exchange programmes, short-term study abroad programmes and dual degree programmes at top global universities is also on the upswing.

JGU is proud of the gender diversity of the student and faculty of JGLS. While 56% of JGLS’ faculty members are women, I am most delighted to share with you that over 70% of the school’s leadership positions are held by women. Similarly, majority of JGLS’ students (53%) are women.

In alignment with the university’s ethos of equity and inclusivity, generous scholarships are provided to students on the basis of merit, financial need and academic performance.

During the past 15 years, over 11,500 JGLS students have benefited from different types of scholarships, amounting to over Rs. 250 crores.

As JGU aspires to offer truly global interdisciplinary education to its students, all schools of JGU function as interdisciplinary hubs within themselves.

JGLS alone offers 276 of the total 824 interdisciplinary courses available to the students of the university offered by all the 12 schools of JGU. The number of legal clinical courses offered at JGLS stands at 66.

While JGLS students get internship opportunities in diverse sectors of the economy and society, they have consistently brought laurels to the university by becoming winners of such prestigious moot court competitions as Sports Law Arbitration Moot SLAM; India Qualifying Rounds, Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition; 3rd GMU CIArb International Maritime Arbitration; IBA ICC Moot Court Competition India National Rounds, among others.

As part of a research-oriented university, the faculty members of JGLS regularly contribute to top academic journals and other publications.

In 2023, the number of publications from JGLS faculty members reached 210 which included peer-reviewed journal articles, books, chapters and op-eds.

To capture this extraordinary evolution and story of JGLS, we have published a Commemorative Brochure, which is data driven than words. As the old adage goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words. The brochure is here: https://bit.ly/JGLS-No1-Brochure2024
