Yash Bharti awards were instituted by late Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1994. Along with the award, the recipients were conferred with ₹11 lakh and a lifetime pension of ₹50,000
However, the awards were discontinued during the rule of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments that came later.
After SP’s Akhilesh Yadav came to power in 2012, the scheme was restarted.
