Who is in BJP and who is in Congress? SG Tushar Mehta, Kapil Sibal discuss political affiliations during electoral bonds case

The hearing took an unexpected turn as Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta and Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal engaged in a brief exchange about their political affiliations.

The exchange began when SG Mehta presented a hypothetical scenario in which a person donating to the Congress party wouldn’t want the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to discover this fact.

“Kindly appreciate the example if it is comfortable to Mr Sibal, just on the lighter side. Suppose that as a contractor, I donate to the Congress party. I do not want BJP to know because it might form a government in the next days,” he stated.

Sibal promptly reminded SG Mehta that he was no longer associated with the Congress party, saying, “My learned friend seems to have forgotten that I am no longer a member of the Congress party.”

Mehta then pointed out that Sibal had previously represented a Congress leader from Madhya Pradesh in court proceedings.

In response, Sibal stated that while Mehta was representing the government, he wasn’t necessarily a member of the BJP.

Mehta responded by saying, “Absolutely not!”

“So I am also not,” replied Sibal.
