Bengaluru Police arrest four swimmers for alleged gangrape of Bengal woman

New Delhi: The Bengaluru Police on Tuesday arrested four men for the alleged gangrape of a woman from West Bengal.

The survivor, a paramedic at a private hospital, told the police on 25 March that the four men had assaulted her.

The accused, identified as Dev Saroha, Yogesh Kumar, Rajat and Shiv Rana, are swimmers from New Delhi who were in Bengaluru for training.

The men have been sent to judicial custody.

Bengaluru North Deputy Commissioner of Police Vinayak Patil said one of the accused, Rajat, befriended the survivor on a dating app. The 22-year-old then met Rajat for dinner on 24 March.

Rajat took her home where the others were waiting. She told the police that all four assaulted her.

The latest incident of sexual assault is a grim reminder that crimes against women is on the rise in the state.

Last August, six men allegedly raped a college student.

Earlier in March, the Bengaluru police arrested one Shivakumar Hirehala after the death of a Dalit woman, Dhaneshwari.

The woman’s family accused Shivakumar, a Lingayat, of setting her ablaze after he refused to marry her over caste.

The couple were classmates while studying engineering and were said to be in a relationship.

Shivakumar claimed Dhaneshwari died by suicide but the police filed cases under Section 302 (murder) and SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act against him.
