Budget 2022 LIVE: All eyes on FM Sithraman as govt likely to boost spending to spur eco growth

New Delhi: All eyes are on Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as she presents Union Budget 2022 Tuesday amid signs of recovery in Indian economy, ravaged by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The key priorities for the government will be to revive consumption and investment and to provide some respite for sectors that are still adversely affected by the pandemic, especially the contact-intensive sectors.

Sitharaman, who will deliver her fourth budget speech, has already defined her focus on capex-led recovery that will require her to loosen the purse strings to revive demand in the economy.

But it will be interesting to watch out if the government only uses the infrastructure spending route to revive demand or will it combine it with measures like tax cuts or increase in tax deductions to increase the disposable income of people.

Among the key things to watch out for in the Budget will be whether the government walks the talk on an aggressive privatisation plan, especially for the state-run banks.

The budget numbers to keep an eye would be the extent of the reduction in the fiscal deficit for the current and next fiscal, the money estimated from disinvestment in state-owned firms and the budget allocations for health, defence and infrastructure ministries.
