Duo held at UP’s Deoria; gold worth over Rs 1.2 crore seized

Deoria (UP),  May 31 (PTI) A man and a woman were arrested at the Deoria Sadar railway station here for smuggling gold worth Rs 1.26 crore, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, Amit Verma and Neha Verma, were nabbed on Tuesday from the first platform of the station after a police team suspected their activities and frisked them, Sudhakar Upadhyay, in-charge of the Government Railway Police here, said.

On being searched, the duo were found to carry 17 gold biscuits, weighing two kilos and hundred grams, Upadhyay said.

The accused are residents of the Gayatripuram area here, the police said.

During interrogation, the duo said they collected the gold from Kolkata and travelled to Patna, after which they boarded the Amrapali Express from the Hajipur railway station there and reached Deoria, Upadhyay said.

The duo said they used to procure the biscuits from a person who smuggled gold from Myanmar and Bangladesh and take it to interested buyers in different districts of Delhi, Mumbai and Purvanchal, he added.

The duo have been taken to Gorakhpur and a case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, the police said. PTI COR SAB RPA
