Odisha to boost inland freshwater fish production: official

Bhubaneswar 23 May (PTI) The Odisha government decided to augment inland freshwater fish production in the state, with the cage fish culture in Hirakud Reservoir emerging as a model, Odisha Chief Secretary SC Mohapatra has said.

Mohapatra said this after assessing a recent spot visit to the cage culture site in the Hirakud reservoir.

He interacted with the fishermen, fish entrepreneurs, and field-level officials of the Department of Fishery and Animal Resources Development on Sunday.

While appreciating the progress made in fish breeding activities so far, Mohapatra directed the department to operationalise the common facility centre and testing laboratory before mass harvesting.

The department was also asked to expedite the fixing of the fish landing floating jetty.

Deputy Director Fisheries, Biraja Prakash Dwibedi, said so far 32 cage aquaculture zones encompassing 625 sub-zones were identified within the limits of national guidelines.

Out of this, 101 subzones were allotted to the local entrepreneurs through an invitation of the expression of interest. So far, 71 entrepreneurs started their field operations after signing MoU with the department.
