Essential Digital Marketing Skills that all freshers need to know!

Another career option one can look forward to after a one-year online MBA program is Digital Marketing

A digital marketing role is a position within a company that is responsible for overseeing and executing digital marketing campaigns. This person is in charge of developing and managing digital marketing strategies and tactics, as well as measuring their effectiveness. They work with other members of the marketing team to create and implement digital marketing plans that reach and engage customers online. Different roles have emerged to take on different tasks in this new landscape. We will look at some of the most common ones below:

  • Developing and managing digital marketing campaigns
  • Managing the company’s website
  • Developing and managing digital marketing budgets
  • Managing the company’s social media presence
  • Developing and managing email marketing campaigns
  • Developing and managing search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) campaigns
  • Developing and managing marketing automation campaigns

The demand for digital marketers is high because businesses are increasingly realizing the importance of having a digital presence. With this, the popularity of Digital Marketing careers is also increasing. It is because digital marketing jobs are one of the best paying jobs and provide exciting job opportunities in the digital marketing career path. The Managers and founders are nowadays on a hunt for skilled digital marketers who can do justice with the company’s digital marketing strategies.

So, how do Managers and Founders Hire Freshers for Digital Marketing roles?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best way to hire a fresher for a digital marketing role will vary depending on the specific needs and requirements of the organization. However, some skills that every recruiter would like to find in a Digital Marketer candidate include Search Engine Optimization (SEO)  skills, Copywriting skills, effective execution of strategies, Data Analytics skills and more.  Let’s have a look at what experts have to say:

Technology and Marketing Automation

Digital marketers must have strong technical skills and knowledge in order to be able to use marketing automation tools effectively. Additionally, they must be able to understand and use data to make informed decisions about marketing strategy.

To fully utilise their abilities, digital marketers require marketing automation technologies. As a result, it’s critical to have a thorough understanding of the tools you use to reach and convert your audience, as well as an understanding of what they can do for you and when to employ them. To be a competent digital marketer, you need to know how to identify the ideal platforms for your business (and adapt to the ones you currently have) in order to personalise the buyer’s journey and provide them with the greatest possible experience—increasing the possibility that they will buy from you.

The candidate must be familiar with automation and other smart technologies to excel in his career. The digital marketer must know the statistical concept and  should be able to verify the efficiency of the campaigns.

SEO Skills

SEO skill is important for a digital marketer because it enables the marketer to improve a website’s ranking on search engines. This, in turn, results in more website visitors and, ideally, more conversions.

As a digital marketer, one of your main problems will be driving traffic to your company’s website. You may overcome this problem by optimising your content or website for search engines like Google and YouTube (the second largest search engine on the internet), resulting in more high-quality website visitors. Tools like Ahrefs and Moz can tell you how many searches there are for a specific phrase, how difficult it is to rank for that term, and more. Google Analytics and marketing automation solutions like HubSpot and Pardot can track search traffic and conversion rates.

A young candidate with SEO knowledge would stand out from the crowd. Ultimately, I want to build a broad understanding of each candidate’s skill set and how it could benefit my business.

Pro Tip: Do you want to learn more about SEO? If so, then we highly recommend enrolling in our free SEO courses! These courses will teach you everything you need to know about SEO, from the basics to more advanced topics.

Data Analytics

A digital marketer with good data analytics skills can use data to measure the success of their campaigns and to make better decisions about where to allocate their resources. They can also use data to identify new opportunities and to optimize their campaigns to achieve better results.

With a growing variety of online tools for measuring data across several platforms, marketers can now more easily analyze and make relevant marketing decisions. Marketers should be familiar with the term data cleansing, which refers to the act of removing inaccurate, duplicated, or incomplete data from a database.

In order to understand whether the candidate will be able to do the job, we typically look for candidates with strong analytical skills and the ability to think critically. We also look for candidates with good communication skills, both written and oral, as well as experience in project management. Experience in digital marketing is not necessarily required, but it is certainly a plus.

Pro Tip: To strengthen your Data Analytics skills, consider doing a Business Analytics course. For an advanced and higher level of understanding on Business Analytics or Digital Marketing, join an Online MBA course.

Digital Savviness and Willingness to learn

A high level of digital savviness is important for any role in today’s business world. However, it is especially important for a position that involves managing and overseeing a company’s online presence. A willingness to learn is also important, as new technologies and platforms are constantly emerging and changing.

When hiring a new joiner for a digital marketing role, I find it important to actually assume that they’re new to the field and cut them some slack on the technical specifics of the job. They’ll pick them up quickly enough. The more important thing to gauge, in my mind, is their ability and willingness to put in time and effort and their capacity to learn quickly. Putting in the time and effort to take digital marketing courses online are a good start, but I want to ensure the person I hire has done something beyond the minimum. Sharing some of your class projects or maybe doing some freelance work ahead of starting a career builder job is a plus – anything that shows me that you’re taking this seriously and that you’ll grow along with your time at my firm.

For Digital Marketing roles, we are looking for those with high adaptability and willingness to learn. To discover new skills in digital marketing, most digital marketers listen in or read on a tutorial and implement what they learned on their website or client’s website. If they have high adaptability, they wouldn’t mind having different assignments that vary monthly depending upon the clients of our agency.

Strong LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn is a social networking site for professionals, and it can be used for recruitment purposes. Few recruiters prefer considering Linkedin profiles as a source of information for knowing a candidate better.

Because I work in B2B tech, I put a lot of emphasis on a candidate’s LinkedIn profile.

Pro Tip: To gain credibility on your profile on LinkedIn, focus on the profile headline and summary. Try to be active on the platform by sharing or posting relevant content. It reinforces your aspiration to build a career in digital marketing. Focus on completing certifications on your profile from well-known digital marketing training/ certification institutes.

Customer Relationship Management

Digital marketers need to have excellent customer relationship management (CRM) skills in order to be successful. CRM skills allow marketers to connect with customers and create long-term relationships. By using CRM skills, digital marketers can collect and track customer data, understand customer needs, and respond to customer feedback. CRM skills also help marketers personalize content and communications for each customer.

Companies may better understand their target market’s evolving demands by keeping an eye on the customer experience. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is an important skill for digital marketers to have since it enables you to keep an eye on and improve the customer experience. The likelihood of a consumer being loyal to your brand improves when you establish a more personal and emotional connection with them. When it comes to customer service management, empathy and communication skills should be instilled in marketers.

Monitoring customer experience allows businesses to better understand their target audience’s changing needs. Customer Relationship Management abilities, which include tactics for monitoring and maximizing customer experience, are essential for digital marketers to master. Connecting with customers on a more emotional and personal level is always beneficial to the company because it builds client loyalty.

Pro Tip: To enhance your Customer Relationship Management, a marketer should develop such skills like empathy and communication. You can also learn these relevant skills by joining a Strategic Digital Marketing course.

Design Fundamentals

Digital marketers need to be able to design effective and visually appealing ads, landing pages, and other marketing collateral. They should also be able to use design software to create these items.

Today, visual content gets you more attention than written material. Videos are sweeping the web since they are recognized to have a greater conversion rate, engagement, and SEO rankings. It is recommended that Digital Marketers have a basic understanding of applications such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, InDesign, and others), Canva, and Inkscape in order to create visual content. It is recommended that you have a fundamental understanding of each skill, with specialities in a few of them.

Skill a lot of recruiters are looking for is the candidate’s ability to design and execute a marketing strategy. Being able to come up with a plan that they know how to execute speaks of a person’s eye for detail and the creative vision they can contribute to the company. Consider this a vital skill when it comes to high-level marketing that a lot of senior managers and supervisors do.

Copywriting

Copywriting is essential for digital marketers. Through copy, they can persuade website visitors to take the desired action through copy, such as downloading a white paper or signing up for a mailing list. Copywriting skills can also help to improve the visibility of a website or blog post, making it more likely to appear on search engine results pages.

It is imperative that digital marketers have a strong command of the written and spoken arts in order to captivate their customers, raise their curiosity, excite their appetite for the product or service, and motivate them to take action. You may use the power of persuasion in a company’s web page headline, your company’s social media posts selling your products or services, or an email to consumers announcing a new promotion in copywriting.

Because content has always been and always will be king, the ability to tell a compelling narrative through copywriting or visual content is paramount. This is especially true in the face of shortened attention span and cluttered digital spaces. Adding storytelling skill training on top of your basic SEO / SEM, analytics, and social media certifications to your resume is always a great idea for entry-level digital marketing applicants.

Strong Communication Skills

Digital marketing is all about communicating with customers through digital channels. This can include email, social media, or marketing automation tools. Learning excellent communication skills are essential in order to create effective digital marketing campaigns. Marketers must be able to understand their customers’ needs and communicate with them in a way that resonates. They must also be able to create engaging and relevant content to their target audience.

A digital marketer’s ability to communicate effectively involves the ability to distribute powerful messages, generate trust, and cultivate connections. You should be able to see things from a new viewpoint and express ideas in ways that the audience can grasp, as well as know what they find interesting and important. This is what a Digital Marketer should have.

For 2022, the most successful & basic things to cross-check in person characteristics while hiring for digital marketing roles are: –

1. They are highly analytical.

2. They are great writers.

3. They know their SEO role in the department.

4. They have the skill to write an email that everyone opens.

5. They have superb communication skills.

Pro Tip: Learn Digital Marketing and the aspects of online marketing. As a digital marketer, you should be proficient in search engine optimization, paid search, email marketing, social media marketing, and website design and development. Additionally, you should be able to track and analyze your marketing results to identify opportunities and optimize your campaigns.

Creativity

Creativity skills in digital marketers refer to the ability to think of new and innovative ideas to promote a product or service online. This may involve developing new marketing campaigns, creating original content, or finding new ways to reach customers. Digital marketers and the future leaders who are creative and innovative can be successful in promoting their products and services online.

Creativity is also essential. I always look for someone who can think outside the box and craft something unique. Such a worker can always come up with lovely ideas fast.

I once hired a creative digital marker. And his creativity gave him an edge over his colleagues. He could think fast and deep, see things from another perspective, and come up with fantastic ideas.

The thing I look for most, when hiring digital marketers, is creativity and an ability to speak, critically, about different marketing campaigns. I always ask candidates to think of a famous marketing campaign and explain why they believe it failed or succeeded. This gives me insight into their ability to analyze what works and what doesn’t and let’s me know, right away, if they are able to identify any cracks in a campaign.

Content Creation

Content creation skills are essential for a digital marketer. They need to be able to create high-quality, engaging content for their website, social media, and other marketing channels. This includes blog posts, articles, infographics, images, and videos.

The creation of content that attracts a company’s intended audience is at the heart of digital marketing. The goal should not only be to produce high-quality, SEO-friendly content, but also to comprehend the process of effectively engaging people. It is suggested that producing evergreen content be included as a goal. This ensures that the material will still be relevant to the customer’s needs whether they find it a day later or years later.

Because the technical aspects of a digital marketing role are constantly changing and often different from company to company, I like to focus much more on content and vision. I want to know that you can write well, are skilled at taking a variety of angles on a topic, and have a strong sense of how to drive online engagement.

Wrapping up

Digital marketing is more than knowing how to run social media ads, be creative, or run an SEO campaign. A Digital Marketer has a set of skills that holistically add incredible insights to an organization.

Even though there will be many changes in the coming years due to automation, marketing skills will still remain critical for every professional in today’s society.

Digital marketing techniques are updating quickly due to the introduction of new platforms, channels and technology providers. However, marketing professionals must update their knowledge regularly, which saves time and helps in better execution of the digital marketing strategies.
