Raw Banana Chukka Fry

I had few raw banana lying in the fridge, i wanted to use them in a different recipe other than poriyal, podimas, fry or my favorite podi fry. So i decided to try a chukka fry recipe but in a jain style without using onions and garlic..It tasted so good and i served it with paruppu rasam, vallarai keerai kootu. Will share both the recipes soon. So hope you give this a try and let me know how it turns out..

Ingredients for Raw Banana Chukka Fry

  • Raw Banana / Vazhakkai – 3 large peeled and chopped
  • Tomato – 1 large chopped
  • Green Chilli – 2 slit
  • Ginger – 1 tbsp grated
  • Chilli Powder – 2 tsp
  • Coriander Powder / Malli Podi – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi – 1 tsp + 1 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder – 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
For Grinding:
  • Coconut – ½ cup grated
  • Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf – 2 tsp
For Seasoning:
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds / Kaduku –  1tsp
  • Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu – 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi – ¼ tsp
  • Curry Leaves – a sprig

How to make Raw Banana Chukka Fry

  1. Grind coconut and fennel seeds to a smooth paste and set aside.
    Start by cooking raw banana. Heat water in a sauce pan, add in salt and turmeric powder. Once it reaches a boil, add in cubed banana and cook for 5 to 7 mins. Turn off the heat and strain it. Set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai. Add in tempering spices, let them sizzle for 30 sec.
  3. Add in tomatoes, green chilli and ginger. Cook them for couple of mins.
  4. Now add in all the spice powders and salt. Mix well.
  5. Now add in cooked banana and toss well with the masala.
  6. Add in coconut paste and cook on a low heat stiring often for 10 mins till the water evaporates and masala coats the raw banana.
  7. Serve with rice and gravy.

Take all your ingredients
