5th Gurjeet Singh Memorial National Moot Court Competition in Collaboration with NHRC by NLU, Assam [May 24 – 26; Cash Prizes Worth Rs. 1.35 Lacs]: Register by May 19!

NLU Assam, is organizing the 5th Gurjeet Singh Memorial NMCC in offline mode in collaboration with NHRC from May 24 to 26, 2024, and is seeking registrations.

About NLUJAA

The National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA) has been established by the Government of Assam by way of enactment of the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009 (Assam Act No. XXV of 2009).

The word ‘School’ was replaced by the word ‘University’ by amending the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam (Amendment) Act, 2012. The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court is the Chancellor of the University.

NLUJAA promotes and makes available modern legal education and research facilities to students and scholars drawn from across the country, including the North East, coming from different socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.

About NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India was established on 12 October, 1993. The statute under which it is established is the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), 1993 as amended by the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2006.

It is in conformity with the Paris Principles, adopted at the first international workshop on national institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights held in Paris in October 1991, and endorsed by the General Assembly of the United Nations by its Regulations 48/134 of 20 December 1993.

The NHRC is an embodiment of India’s concern for the promotion and protection of human rights. Section 2(1)(d) of the PHRA defines Human Rights as the rights relating to life, liberty, equality and dignity of the individual guaranteed by the Constitution or embodied in the International Covenants and enforceable by courts in India.

About the Competition

Prof. (Dr.) Gurjeet Singh served as the founder and vice-chancellor of two national law universities, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law in his home state of Punjab and the National Law University and Judicial Academy of Assam.

The Gurjeet Singh Memorial National Moot Court Competition is organised by the National Law University and Judicial Academy of Assam in memory of our beloved founder, the late Prof. (Dr.) Gurjeet Singh, who left for his heavenly abode on the 1st of April 2017, out of indebtedness for his contribution and to symbolically immortalise his legacy in the annals of the National Law University and Judicial Academy of Assam.

The last edition of the competition was organised in collaboration with, The Chambers of Abhinav Mishra, Advocates, and Solicitors. The competition received an overwhelming response with a participation of 40 teams, including National Law Universities, Central Universities and all the Prominent Private Law Schools of the country.

Eligibility

The Competition is open to bona fide undergraduate students of recognized colleges / institutions / universities who are currently pursuing their Bachelor’s Degree in Law i.e. 3-year LLB or 5 year Integrated or Honour’s LLB Programme with all combinations on a regular basis.

Each team shall comprise a maximum of three members and a minimum of two members consisting of either two speakers, or two speakers and one researcher, respectively. The number cannot be modified under any circumstances post registration.

Prizes

  • Winner: Cash Prize of Rs. 50,000/- with trophy and certificate.
  • 1st Runner Up: Cash Prize of Rs. 25,000/- with trophy and certificate.
  • Best Orator Male: Cash Prize of Rs. 10,000/- with trophy and certificate.
  • Best Orator Female: Cash Prize of Rs. 10,000/- with trophy and certificate.
  • Best Researcher: Cash Prize of Rs. 10,000/- with trophy and certificate.
  • Best Memorial (Applicants): Cash Prize of Rs. 15,000/- with trophy and certificate.
  • Best Memorial (Respondents): Cash Prize of Rs. 15,000/- with trophy and certificate.
  • Certificate of Participation shall be provided to all the participants.
