Duration of internship

How did you apply for the internship?

The Competition Commission of India is an independent body with the power to enter into contracts and should the contracts be broken they can sue the parties involved. The Commission consists of a maximum of six members who are tasked with sustaining and promoting the interests of consumers in order to foster an ideal environment for economic competition.

The other function of the Commission is to advise the Government of India regarding competition in the economy and create public awareness on the same issue.

I applied for the Internship through the procedure stipulated on their official website. The same gets modified with respect to the circumstances of the Tenure.

A form is to be filled with the prospective interns’ basic information and area of interest, specific to the Competition Law of India. Along with the same, a NOC (Non-Objection Certificate) from the respective University; an SOP (Statement Of Purpose) with the applicant’s CV/Resume are to be duly annexed.

The eligibility for the Internship & other details can be found on the CCI’s portal.

Application is to be made (via email or through the post) at least 6 months prior to the desired tenure and with the conditions stipulated on the website. If selected, an intimation via email will be sent by them prior to the commencement of the Internship (including all the terms and regulations which are to be executed in the course of the Internship).

First day formalities, infrastructure, first impression

CCI conducts Internships on a monthly basis and they receive more than 500 applications in a month, out of which less than 20 are approved and selected.

First day of the Internship initiated with an Orientation Programme, wherein the Joint Director(s) of the Commission apprised interns wrt. the Commission, Library Access, Responsibilities that shall be assigned to them in the due course, and many other ancillary details.

Interns were asked to introduce themselves and give a brief regarding their area of interest (on which they are likely to pursue their subsequent research). Queries were invited and were answered judiciously.

Main tasks

The major task of the interns is to present substantial research work for Commission’s assistance (for which access to CCI’s library is given to every selected applicant).

A mentor was allocated to all the involved interns (including me) for the respective tenure. Discussions with respect to desired research topics and/or wide-ranged ideas were posed by me to my allocated mentor (one of the Joint Director(s) of CCI) for authorization; amongst which only one topic was mutually finalized and was researched by me solely.

Post the finalization of the topic, the research work on the respective topic was undertaken by me, and the same was scrutinized by my mentor from time to time, the record of which was maintained in a weekly report (which was to be submitted for the effectuation of the Internship).

Subsequently, various research drafts were prepared, and the final draft was approved by my mentor. Finally, the respective draft of my Research Report was submitted to the ‘Advocacy Division’ of the Competition Commission of India, ensuing which a presentation was prepared by me (pertinent to my respective topic) and was thereby presented in front of all the corresponding interns and members of the Commission.

Post successful effectuation of the same, the respective interns (including me) were provided with the ‘Certificate of Completion’ of the Internship. In crux, the work allocated is inclined towards advanced research and develops one’s writing skills as well.

[Note: Specifications with respect to the research work cannot be disclosed, due to confidentiality and privacy concerns.]

Interns from the whole of India apply for this reputable Internship, every month. A diverse range of students from various ethnicities works together, which creates a dynamic environment and thereby enhances one’s social skill set.

Overall, the working environment was very positive and professionally enriching.

Anything else?

In conclusion, considering the spirit of growth, I am more than grateful to my mentors, who have encouraged me to try things that are exterior to the milieu of my comfort range and have provided guidance, support, and feedback across all things, not only pertinent to legal theory but also to the sphere of practical application.
