First day formalities, infrastructure, first impression

My first day was very informative. Upon reaching the office, I was briefed about the Department of Law and Legislative Affairs and how it works, file cases, nature of cases entertained, process, etc

It was really fascinating for me to directly interact with Principle secretary who was a former judge of the high court and other Secretaries who were former judges of district courts, and directly interact with the section officers.

This department is the most important part of the government of Madhya Pradesh and is divided into 08 sections/branches.

The internship schedule was divided into 21 days so that one can learn and understand the working of each branch. Sections/branches are as follows –

  1. Drafting branch
  2. Vetting branch
  3. Translation branch
  4. Prosecution branch
  5. Writ branch
  6. Criminal branch
  7. Civil branch
  8. Judicial branch

Main tasks

My task was to learn and understand the working of each branch of this department. I read 39 draft legislation, civil and criminal case files, appointment files, Writ Petition files, Pardon applications and some examples of legislation like.

  1. मध्यप्रदेश लोक निजी संपत्ति को नुकसान का निवारण एवं नुकसान की वसूली अधिनियम 2021
  2. The Madhya Pradesh Freedom of religion bill 2021 there acts or bills are beautifully drafted by the department. And I interacted with the officers who were working there and on the last day of the internship, was asked to prepare a Report To show the working of this department and what I learned throughout my internship tenure.

Work environment

The work environment was excellent and we had absolutely no problems during the internship period. The people at the office are quick in their jobs and were always ready to help and guide us wherever possible.

The officers were very interactive and were ready to share their life and work experiences. And the whole environment of the department was very peaceful.

Good things

The best thing for me was to interact with Secretaries who were former judges of the High Court in the first place. Flexible timings, a little workload, and supportive people around us was the best thing.

Also, there are many refreshment stalls nearby so you can grab snacks after work, or during a lunch break. And the canteen is also on the 3rd floor of the department.

Bad things

The period of 21 days is a long tenure and also interns are not allowed to leave before the office working hours.

Stipend/perks/certificate

No stipend

Details about accommodation and commute

No accommodation is provided by the office but PGs and Hostels are easily available. For commuting, various public transport modes are available.

Anything else?

The overall internship experience was really good and informative as I got to know how a bill is drafted, interacted with the drafting officer and got knowledge on what happens when a bill is passed and the exact procedure involved in the legislation that cannot be learned through books because the bookies knowledge and the practical life, both are different to each other.

Also, I learned about the appointments being made of lawyers and judges in the various District Courts and who are involved and all merits being considered. I also got to know about the insight of the judiciary and how this department plays a key role in assisting the judiciary.
