About the Job

JP Morgan Chase & Co. is hiring for the role of CIB EMEA Capital Markets Counsel, for its office in Mumbai. The EMEA Capital Markets Legal Group is part of the EMEA CIB Legal Department supporting EMEA Capital Markets, including Debt Capital Markets (DCM) and Equity Capital Markets (ECM).

Responsibilities

  • The candidate will initially be responsible for covering EMEA Medium Term Note (MTN) Programme updates, establishments, drawdowns, accessions, and standalone issuances by issuers globally. In time, the candidate will also have the opportunity to work on bespoke projects and different products as appropriate. The candidate will work closely with EMEA bankers and legal colleagues, with touchpoints across various global teams.
  • Proactively support the business groups across EMEA which originate transactions, through review and negotiation of legal documents, legal advice, and providing guidance on risk assessment and solutions.
  • Review, negotiate, and assist with drafting confidentiality agreements, mandate letters, underwriting, and related documentation.
  • Instruct and work closely with external counsel in the review and negotiation of legal opinions and supervising the legal due diligence involving the business and transactions.
  • Liaise with the business teams, other control areas, and colleagues in Legal in setting/maintaining documentation standards, and internal policies and monitoring relevant legal, regulatory, and documentation developments.
  • Proactively sharing experience and know-how with colleagues in Legal, where appropriate globally. Provide training to the business and within Legal as appropriate.
  • Participation in Legal and Firm-wide projects.

Eligibility

  • A minimum of 5 years PQE in India (additional qualification from the US and/or England & Wales will be viewed favourably).
  • International capital markets experience in a top-tier law firm and/or in-house experience in a comparable financial institution MTN program-related work experience will be viewed favourably but is not a prerequisite.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) with the ability to interact with senior business personnel and stakeholders in other functions.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to cover matters across time zones with regional and global stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure and appropriately prioritize to meet deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Able to appreciate and grasp concepts of law from jurisdictions other than India.
  • Ability to identify and escalate issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Ability to adapt and apply legal skills in new businesses and subjects in which a lawyer may not have expertise.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player, proactively and multi-task.
  • Self-directed and highly motivated attitude coupled with an ability to work collaboratively in a high-performing team.
  • The attorney must be licensed to practice law in the state/jurisdiction where the position is based or otherwise in compliance with the in-house counsel registration rules of that state/jurisdiction.
  • All candidates for roles in the Legal department must successfully complete a conflict of interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment.
  • Attorney candidates must be in compliance with all relevant licensing requirements including the requirements of the jurisdiction where the role will be located prior to commencement of employment.
