JOB POST: Research Associate at FLAME University, Pune: Apply Now!

The Centre for Knowledge Alternatives, FLAME University, Pune is seeking applications from eligible candidates for the role of Research Associate.

About the Centre and the Role

The Centre for Knowledge Alternatives, FLAME University, Pune was set up in 2021 with an ambitious goal: building a massive dashboard of district-level statistics and cultures of India. Working closely with local partners and government offices, they are creating huge inventories of knowledge about India at the district level.

The idea is that such granularity of information allows better policy decisions for governments, assists (even local) businesses with market research, and offers rich fodder for anyone (scholars and professionals alike) interested in India.

The British had undertaken a mammoth effort of writing district gazetteers of India. Governments still write gazetteers, but very poorly. They want to reimagine the exercise, shed colonial frames of knowledge about us, and make it more responsive to the needs and aspirations of India in the 21st century.

Expectations

Having done its pilot in select districts of Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh (not released yet), they are now in the phase of expansion and rapid scaling up. They are looking for committed, driven and curious young graduates in any discipline to join.

The candidate must have:

  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a good sense of humor (it works like a start-up)
  • Grit and curiosity

And at least two of the following:

  • Knowledge of quantitative software like Tableau, STATA, R Studio, etc. (If not, at least the interest to learn it quickly and spend a long time working with data),
  • Proficiency in GIS and mapping,
  • Excellent writing skills in English and knowledge of 1-2 Indian languages (Marathi, Hindi to start with but even others are okay),
  • Demonstrable interest/experience in fieldwork,
  • Design experience and skills (for instance in software like Adobe InDesign, Procreate, Photoshop, etc.).

What will they offer?

  • An opportunity to be part of a motivated, fast-paced work environment. They care about what matters to you, so they are always looking for individuals interested in expanding its work through their own research (writing op-eds/ research articles).
  • The project offers a remarkably steep learning curve. Also, an unusually exciting deep dive into understanding India.
  • As part of a thriving academic community at FLAME, you will have multiple opportunities to interact with faculty working on a number of research projects. Access to the University Library and other resources like sports, and cultural activities on campus is a plus.

Remuneration

Commensurate with experience.

How to Apply?

Email your CV with a brief note about why you want to join the project to smriti.jalihal@flame.edu.in. Based on your application, they will schedule a short call which will be followed by an assignment and an interview.

Location

possibility.
