Karnataka High Court issues notice to State in challenge to laws mandating teaching of Kannada in CBSE, ICSE schools

The petition asserts that these laws significantly infringe upon the freedom of Karnataka students to choose their first, second, and third language subjects. The same would have serious implications on their educational achievements and future career prospects, it was argued.

Such legislation adversely impact educators who teach languages apart from Kannada, the plea further said.

“Clearly, these enactments have been brought into force without any regard to the interests of the school children or teachers who will be gravely affected by these enactments. The above enactments fall foul of several constitutional safeguards and guarantees and are also repugnant to the Karnataka Education Act, 1983.”
