About the Organisation

A new chapter of educational enlightenment was added to the culturally enriched soil of Bengal with the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University Centre, Murshidabad in 2010. The Centre, accredited by NAAC in A grade, is empowered by Section 5(2) (C) of the AMU (Amendment) Act, 1981, and under Section 12(2) of the University Act. [Act XL 1920 and AMU (Amendment) Act, 1972].

The Centre is located in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal which served as the capital city of the Nawabs of Bengal. Murshidabad being a historical place is replete with numerous historical and tourist spots. Spread over an area of 288 acres of land, the Centre is divided into two plots by an irrigation canal.

It is located nearly 40 km from Farakka and 60 km from Berhampur town of Murshidabad. It is well connected with road and railway networks. It lies 250 km North of Kolkata on NH34 and the nearest railway junction is Jangipur Road (approx 08 km). By air, it can be reached through Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata.

The Centre started MBA and BALLB courses in 2011 and added B. Ed. in 2013 to its portfolio of courses. The student intake in MBA and BALLB is 60 each while in B. Ed. 50 seats are offered under various subjects. At present, the AMU Murshidabad Centre represents students from 18 states of India.

The Centre is carrying forward the great legacy and cultural ethos of Aligarh Muslim University. It stands for bringing an educational revolution in the country for socially, economically, and educationally backward communities, who have so far lost the opportunity to develop. It is committed to secular ideas and is providing quality education to all sections of society at an affordable cost.

Department of Law

The Law Department at Aligarh Muslim University Centre, Murshidabad, was established in 2010, becoming a beacon of legal education excellence in the heart of West Bengal. Accredited with an A grade by NAAC, it is operated under the esteemed guidance of the AMU (Amendment) Act of 1981 and the University Act.

A rigorous curriculum, designed to blend theoretical insights with real-world applications, is offered, ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and ethical framework necessary to excel in the legal profession. Courses, including the esteemed five-year integrated BALLB program, inspected and approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI), are provided.

About the Competition

The Legal Opinion Competition, organized by the Law Society AMUCM, serves as a pivotal opportunity for law students at Aligarh Muslim University Centre Murshidabad to delve deep into the intricacies of legal discourse. It not only encourages dialogue but also cultivates critical thinking and analytical skills crucial for budding legal professionals.

Through participation in this competition, students not only enhance their legal skills but also contribute meaningfully to the advancement of justice and the rule of law.

Team Composition

The team may consist of a minimum of 1 member and a maximum of 2 members.

Registration

  • The final competition registration date is April 5, 2024.
  • There is no registration fee.
  • All interested teams wishing to register can access the registration form via the provided link at the end of this post.
  • The problem will be released on April 6, 2024, and participants are required to submit their solutions by April 7, 2024, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
  • Papers submitted after this timeframe will not be accepted.
  • Participants are permitted to consult bare acts, reference books, and authentic sources. However, any paper found to have more than 20% plagiarism will be rejected.
  • Participants are required to submit the soft copy of the Legal Opinion in PDF format to lexsocietasamucm@gmail.com.
  • The subject line should read: “Submission – Legal Opinion Drafting Competition – (Name of Participant 1) – (Name of Participant 2).”
  • Results are expected to be announced in the third week of April (tentative).
  • All participants will be issued a certificate of participation.
  • Entries submitted after the deadline will be automatically disqualified.
  • Any plagiarized submissions will also be disqualified.

Judging Criteria

Each opinion shall be evaluated on a scale of 100 points by an evaluator, with the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge of Law and Facts – 25 points
  2. Proper and Articulate Analysis – 25 points
  3. Extent and Use of Research – 20 points
  4. Clarity and Organization – 20 points
  5. Grammar and Style – 10 points

Format of the Submission

  • The language for the competition will be strictly English.
  • The font used must be Times New Roman, size 12, with line spacing set to 1.5, and one-inch margins on each side.
  • Footnotes should be in Times New Roman, size 10, with single line spacing.
  • Page numbers should be placed at the bottom of each page.
  • The length of the opinion should not exceed 2500 words.
  • The cover page of the submission should include the names of the authors, their designations (i.e., year of study), and the name of their institution.

Prizes

  • I prize : Rs 2000.
  • II prize : Rs 1200.
  • III prize : Rs 800.
