My journey in Supreme Court began by mentioning a case before Justice YV Chandrachud; I now pass the baton to his son: CJI UU Lalit

On his last day as a judge, the CJI also revealed a strange coincidence in his legal career in the Supreme Court.

His journey as a lawyer at the Supreme Court began by mentioning a case in the early 1980s before the then CJI YV Chandrachud, and he would now be passing on the baton of CJI to Justice YV Chandrachud’s son, Justice DY Chandrachud.

“My journey in this court began through Court no. 1. I was arguing in Bombay and then I came here to mention it before CJI YV Chandrachud. My journey now ends here. I now pass the baton to the son of that man himself and an eminent jurist,” CJI Lalit said.

CJI Lalit is set to retire tomorrow but the Court will remain closed on account of Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Hence, the ceremonial bench headed by him and also comprising incoming CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice Bela M Trivedi sat in Supreme Court today when law officers and senior advocates and lawyers lined up to bid farewell to him.
